Jethro Tull / discography

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson and Martin Barre) live in Chicago 1973

This discography is an overview of the musical works of the British rock band Jethro Tull . This only contains legal publications, so no bootlegs. With the exception of the entries in the “Publications without exclusive material” section, each listed publication contains exclusive content, i.e. at least one otherwise unpublished title. CDs that do not contain any additional material compared to a DVD of the same name and would therefore be dispensable for a complete inventory of the authorized music are listed but marked accordingly. Releases that once contained exclusive material, but which are now fully included in the form of bonus tracks on the revised albums, are not listed, or are only listed in the section “Releases without exclusive material”.

The studio albums up to and including Roots to Branches (1995) are available as reworked CDs, which compared to earlier releases mostly contain bonus tracks.

Solo releases of the band head Ian Anderson can be found in his personal article.

More compilations

More exclusive publications

Jethro Tull live at Forest National ( Brussels ) on June 1st 2007
  • 25th Anniversary Box Set , 1993. The material of the four CDs was completely exclusive until October 2010, after which the second CD with additional titles was added as a bonus CD to the deluxe edition of “Stand Up”.

The order in the following list is chronological, in the case of compilations after the time of publication, otherwise according to the time of the recording of the material. The publications are available on CD unless otherwise stated. The entries contain information about the type and scope of the exclusive shares.

  • The Derek Lawrence Sampler , 1991. Line Records CD single titled Blues for the 18th , one of the first studio recordings from 1968; Derek Lawrence was the producer. In 1998 the title was published again on Line Music, on the compilation Some Sides of Line - 20th Anniversary . The song has also been available on the 50th anniversary edition of This Was since 2018 .
  • Seventeen , 1969. B-side of the 7-inch vinyl single Sweet Dream . A shortened version (dramatically, but not implausible in view of the repetitive song structure) can be found as a bonus title on the revised version of Stand Up . The complete version is now also included in the Deluxe Edition of Stand Up .
  • A Stitch in Time , 1978. B-side of the 7-inch vinyl single Sweet Dream (live) . A shortened version (not implausible in view of the repetitive outro) can be found as a bonus title on the revised version of Stormwatch . However, the title was published in its complete version on the 40th Anniversary Force 10 Edition of Stormwatch in 2019 .
  • 20 Years of Jethro Tull , 1988. 3-CD or 5-LP box set. Contains live recordings from 1977 to 1987, exclusive BBC recordings, exclusive studio material and a remix by Moths . Some of the material that was exclusive at the time of publication has now been distributed as an extra title on the revised albums. Since then, seventeen titles have been exclusive to the box, two of which are studio titles. There is also a slimmed-down single CD release.
  • 20 Years of Jethro Tull (video), 1988. Contains exclusive material such as interviews and promo clips. So far only released as VHS video.
  • Rocks on the Road , double CD single from 1991. Exclusive tracks: demo version by Jack-A-Lynn (Ian Anderson solo) and six live tracks.
  • 25th Anniversary Box Set , 4-CD box set from 1993. CD 1 contains remix versions, CD 2 the concert in New York's Carnegie Hall from 1970, with the exception of the portions that have already been released on Living in the Past , CD 3 new recordings of older pieces and CD 4 live recordings from the period 1969 to 1992. The concert in Carnegie Hall on CD 2 has now been completed with the parts that were on Living in the Past and with improved sound as a bonus CD (79 min.) Re-released with the deluxe edition of “Stand Up”. This version is also supplied with an audio DVD, on which the concert can be heard in full length of 1 hour and 42 minutes with all announcements and solos in 5.1 surround sound and in stereo.
  • Nightcap , double CD from 1993. The first CD contains the largely complete Chateau D'Herouville sessions ( Chateau D'Isaster Tapes ), the previously "lost album" from 1973. To complete the recordings, Ian Anderson played for the partly missing vocal traces in 1993 new flute traces. The second CD contains more exclusive studio tracks from 1974 to 1991, some of which were later re-released as bonus tracks on the revised studio albums.
  • Something with a Pulse , 1997. Tribute CD for the already seriously ill drummer of the A- Sessions and subsequent tour, who died in 2005 , Mark Craney, who can be heard on six tracks on drums. Exclusive Tull track: Black Sunday (live 1980). Also includes: A new recording of Song for Jeffrey by Ian Anderson.
  • Bends Like a Willow , CD single from 1999 with the exclusive studio track All Trickles Down .
  • It's for you! , 2001. Contains two exclusive Tull Live tracks; very limited but authorized publication in the form of a free supplement to Tull magazine A New Day .
  • It's for You - Two! , 2003. Contains four exclusive Tull Live tracks; very limited but authorized publication in the form of a free supplement to Tull magazine A New Day .
  • Ring out Solstice Bells , CD single from 2004 with a live recording by God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen from that year and a new recording also recorded in 2004 by Slipstream .
  • The Best of Acoustic Jethro Tull , 2007. Compilation of already published titles except for two exclusive tracks: a new recording by One Brown Mouse and a live version of King Henry's Madrigal , here titled Pastime with Good Company .

Other relevant publications

  • The John Evan Band: Live '66 (released 1990). Mono recording of a concert by the band of Ian Anderson and John Evan, from which Jethro Tull would develop. Very limited but authorized publication that could only be purchased through Tull magazine A New Day .
  • Maddy Prior : Woman in the Wings , 1978. On this album, which was co-produced by Ian Anderson, the entire line-up of Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Barrie Barlow, David Palmer and with the exception of John Evan, is involved John Glascock - but they don't all work together on any track: Anderson's flute can only be heard in the piece Gutter Geese , Barre's electric guitar only in the piece Cold Flame . Barlow plays the drums on these two and four other tracks; especially the drums in Cold Flame are very reminiscent of his style at Tull.
  • A Classic Case , 1985. (Re-released in 1993 under the title Classic Jethro Tull ; re-released in 2008 under the title The London Symphony Orchestra Plays Jethro Tull .) On this album, the London Symphony Orchestra , conducted by David Palmer, recorded pieces by Jethro Tull; Ian Anderson and Martin Barre participated.
  • To Cry You a Song - A Collection of Tull Tales , 1996. It is a tribute album with cover versions of Tull songs, on which Mick Abrahams , Clive Bunker, Glenn Cornick and David Pegg u. a. and Keith Emerson , Roy Harper , John Wetton and Robert Berry participate.
  • Mick Abrahams (& the This Was Band): This Is , 1998. Live re-recording of the Tull debut album This Was from 1968 by the first Tull guitarist and his band from 1998, who played a key role in it.

Publications without exclusive material

There are numerous compilations ("best-of" albums), EPs and singles, the content of which is not (no longer) exclusive, which means that you can dispense with a complete inventory of the published music. The following exemplary list does not claim to be complete.

  • Repeat - The Best of Jethro Tull Vol II (1977)
  • The Best of Jethro Tull: The Anniversary Collection (1993) (2 CDs)
  • A Jethro Tull Collection (1997)
  • Through the Years (1997)
  • The Very Best of Jethro Tull (2001)
  • Life Is a Long Song (vinyl EP, 1971)
  • Ring Out, Solstice Bells (vinyl EP, 1976)
