Living in the Past is a compilation album by the progressive rock band Jethro Tull .

occupation

Jethro Tull recorded the album with Ian Anderson , Martin Barre , Mick Abrahams , John Evan , Glenn Cornick , Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond , Barriemore Barlow , Clive Bunker , David Palmer and Lou Toby.

history

The pieces were recorded between July 1968 and May 1971 and sorted almost chronologically on the album. The double album was released on June 23, 1972 in the United Kingdom and on October 31, 1972 in the USA. The title song was already released as a single in 1969, but only entered the charts in the USA after the release of the double album, where it reached number 11.

In 1994 the first CD version was released, which for reasons of space contained fewer pieces than the double albums.

album

The double album contains almost all of the band's previously released singles, the five tracks from the EP Life Is a Long Song, several tracks from previous albums and the two live tracks By Kind Permission Of and Dharma for One from concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York , which were added in November 1970. Most of the tracks were composed and written by Anderson; the instrumental title By Kind Permission Of is an adaptation of several themes of classical music by John Evan, Dharma for One is by Anderson and Bunker. Bourée is the adaptation of a Bourrée by Johann Sebastian Bach by Anderson. The titles of the EP can be found on the B-side of the second LP. The songs Song for Jeffrey, Bourée, Teacher, Inside and Locomotive Breath come from the first four studio albums , as well as Alive and Well and Living In and Hymn 43 , depending on the edition .

Cover

The brown, grained leather-look cover shows the gold embossing Ian Anderson with the flute, with ornaments on all four sides. The band name and album title are also gold-colored in capital letters above the Anderson picture. The back, which is also brown, shows the same grain. The inside of the cover has a pink, album-sized, 20-page booklet with over 50 photos of the band. The last three pages contain the “credits” of the songs and the last page the general album “credits”.

effect

The album peaked at number 8 in the UK and number 3 in the US.
