Dave Pegg (* 2. November 1947 in Birmingham ) is a British folk rock - bass player and singer. He is best known for his work with Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull , but has worked with numerous other musicians.

biography

Pegg first worked in an insurance office. However, as the son of a singer and grandson of a banjo player, he eventually became drawn to music and taught himself to play the guitar . After playing lead guitar with Roy Everett's Blueshounds for a while, he switched to bass and joined the Uglys under the direction of Steve Gibbons .

Over time, Pegg began to enjoy folk music more and more and began playing bass and mandolin in Ian Campbell's band in the early 1960s . At the end of 1969 he finally became a member of the respected folk rock band Fairport Convention , of which he is still a member. He first appeared on the album Full House (1970) and became the most constant musician in the band, whose line-up carousel rarely came to a standstill.

In 1979 Pegg replaced John Glascock with Jethro Tull and worked on a total of seven studio albums by the band as bassist (and occasionally on the mandolin), from A (1980) to Roots to Branches (1995). During this time, Fairport Convention remained his main project, and when the band experienced a surge in popularity in the 1990s, he gave up his job with Jethro Tull in 1995 due to constant touring. In 2003 he took part again as a guest on two pieces of the Jethro Tull Christmas album .

He also founded the Woodworm Records label , on which he released his solo debut The Cocktail Cowboy Goes It Alone in 1983 . In 1998 Peggs released a second solo album called Birthday Party .

Dave Pegg has been organizing the annual festival in Cropredy, Oxfordshire, since the early 1980s . Initially this was a small festival that only a few Fairport Convention fans attended, but now the Cropredy Festival has established itself as a world-famous folk festival with over 20,000 visitors annually. Since 1998 Pegg has been playing with Steve Gibbons in the band The Dylan Project alongside his other commitments, especially the Fairport Convention . With the guitarist of this band, PJ Wright, Pegg has been performing as a duo since 2006 and two albums have already been released.

His son Matt Pegg is the bassist with Procol Harum .
