Catfish Rising is the eighteenth studio album by the progressive rock band Jethro Tull .

occupation

Jethro Tull recorded the album with the regular cast Ian Anderson , Martin Barre , Dave Pegg and Doane Perry . Among the guests was Andrew "Andy" Giddings (keyboard), who performed on This Is Not Love , Rocks on the Road and Doctor to My Disease and became a permanent member of the band afterwards. Other guests included Foss Paterson (keyboard on White Innocence ), John Bundrick (keyboard on Sleeping with the Dog ) and Matt Pegg, the son of Dave Pegg, as bass guitarist in This Is not Love , Rocks on the Road and Still Loving You Tonight . The compositions and texts are by Ian Anderson.

history

In the spring of 1991 the band recorded 18 tracks. Ten of the pieces were released as LP in autumn; As a limited edition, the LP version contained an additional 12 "single and, like the CD that was released at the same time, three other tracks. Following the release, the band went on a Catfish tour through Europe and North America. One of the remaining five tracks ( Night in the Wilderness ) was released as the B-side of a single, the other four tracks are included in the album Nightcap , released in 1993. The remastered CD, released in 2006, contains two bonus tracks. The singles were Rocks on the Road , This Is Not Love , Still Loving You Tonight in 1992 and Doctor to My Disease published.

album

Like the two previous albums Crest of a Knave and Rock Island, Catfish Rising is characterized by hard rock . The title means something like "Ascending Catfish ".

LP version

This Is Not Love is a fast paced hard rock track. It's about a couple in a winter seaside resort whose relationship is about to fail. In the song Occasional Demons , a well-to-do man is reminded of "occasional demons" who appear as animals and represent the poor. The music is characterized by rock and folk ; the electric guitar is in the foreground. Rocks on the Road is ostensibly about a traveling salesman and his loneliness. However, the song has autobiographical traits: the singer is also often on the road and “sells” his songs. The song is carried by melancholy. It starts out folky with acoustic guitar and gradually becomes rockier. A jazz interlude is introduced with the text "A little light music to chase it all away" - A Little Light Music is also the name of the band's follow-up album, which includes Rocks on the Road . The piece ends with an instrumental part of flute and electric guitar.

The text of Thinking Round Corners consists of nonsense lyrics and seems surrealistic . After a folky intro, the song becomes rockier. Anderson sings with a disguised voice, the piece is characterized by a humorous attitude. Still Loving You Tonight is performed in sustained three-quarter time . The singer assures a woman of his love, although he is about to leave her.

In Doctor to My Disease , Anderson describes his experience with mild depression . He forbids advice from self-proclaimed "doctors". The piece is fast and rocky, the electric guitar dominates. Like a Tall Thin Girl , on the other hand, is a funny piece about Anderson and Doane Perry who meet an attractive, tall young woman in an Indian restaurant. Anderson realizes that he is too small and brings the taller Perry into conversation. The folky piece, which takes up Indian music, is characterized by the mandolin.

Sparrow on the Schoolyard Wall is a lively, rocking piece, introduced by the flute. Mandolin, flute and electric guitar dominate as instruments. A reluctant girl (or boy) is encouraged to come out of herself. Roll Yer Own is a textually and musically humorous piece. The singer recommends masturbation when there is no other option, such as money for a prostitute. The piece begins with a mandolin solo. Towards the end there are two fallacies, the last phrases are repeated in each case. Gold-Tipped Boots, Black Jacket and Tie is a humorous, fast track with a folky intro that becomes more rock in the course. Here, too, the instruments flute, mandolin and electric guitar are in the foreground. The singer is battered, but promises to come back with "boots with gold tips, black jacket and tie".

Additional titles

White Innocence depicts a scene after a festival, apparently in 1969. The singer takes a young woman with him in his car. Both are lonely, but their emotions do not lead to an rapprochement. The woman finally gets out. The long piece is characterized by an elegiac tone.

In Sleeping with the Dog the singer describes the bad sides of his partner, which lead to the singer having to "sleep with the dog". The rocky, but worn piece is dominated by keyboard, flute and electric guitar. The ironic When Jesus Came to Play is about an appearance by "Jesus" as a band leader in a pub. But his songs only create boredom and the audience leaves the hall. Musically, the piece is quite simple based on the text. The 2007 version is slower than the original.

Extra title 2006

The CD version released in 2006 contains two bonus tracks, Night in the Wilderness and a live version of Jump Start from the album Crest of the Knave. The theme of Night in the Wilderness is isolation in a relationship. The phrase "Catfish jumping" appears in the text, the only reminiscence of the album title and apparently a reference to the appearance of the Catfish in the Catfish Blues , which was sung by musicians like Muddy Waters (as Rollin 'Stone ) and Jimi Hendrix . The rocking piece with flute and electric guitar is characterized by a catchy riff . The version by Jump Start is even more influenced by the electric guitar than the original.

Cover

The cover was designed by Geoff Halpin, Phil Rogers, John Pasche and Jim Gibson.

On the front you can see the band name in ornate capital letters, the album title below and in between the representation of a fish rising from stylized water, all in changing colors from orange to green to blue, on a black background. There are small decorative elements to the left and right of the picture in the middle of the cover. The back of the CD version shows an equally ornate and colored emblem made up of the letters J and T, including the song title and the name and details of the record label. On the LP version, the song titles are above the emblem.

effect

The album peaked at number 27 in the UK and number 88 in the US. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the album rose to number 21. At Allmusic , the original edition received three out of five possible points.

The single This Is Not Love reached number 14 in the US charts, Rocks on the Road number 47 in the UK.
