Nightcap Roots to Branches (1995)

Nightcap: The Unreleased Masters 1973–1991 is a Jethro Tull double album with older and previously unreleased material. It was released on November 22, 1993. The first CD contains material recorded in August 1972. Some of the tracks were later re-recorded and released in a different order in 1973 as Jethro Tull's sixth album A Passion Play . The lyrics to Critique Oblique and Scenario actually refer to A Passion Play . Scenario , Audition and No Rehearsal were already released in the 1988 box set, 20 Years of Jethro Tull , as parts of a single piece called The Chateau d'Isaster Tapes . This overall title is also used on Nightcap as the title of the first CD. The content of the second CD ranges from 1974 to 1991. Part of the proceeds were given to charitable causes .

background

For tax reasons, Jethro Tull began recording a new album near Paris in the Château D'Hérouville. From 1970 to 1985 numerous recordings by British musicians were made there. The whole thing turned out to be a fiasco for technical, production and health reasons (hence the name Chateau d'Isaster Tapes ). The recording sessions were canceled and the band returned to the UK to record A Passion Play .

The second CD contains pieces that have not yet been released on phonograms due to a lack of quality or great resemblance to selected pieces.

Ian Anderson himself warns in the liner notes before the CD that "everyone's taste not" is but a "somewhat dizzying nightcap ( nightcap ) for old friends." He stated that he wanted to sell the album at the lowest possible price and that his income as a songwriter would be donated to Balnain House, Home of Highland Music in Inverness, Scotland, and the Animal Health Trust .

reception

Bruce Eder from Allmusic awards 2.5 out of 5 points. He thinks the material is "not even second class". The first CD is "at times pretty, but also unformed and clearly unfinished", the second CD "less problematic because less splintered". He praises Piece of Cake and Broadford Bazaar, but hears "aimless noodles and senseless depth" from most of the tracks on the second CD. Udo Gerhards partly shares this opinion, but praises the fact that Jethro Tull acted “compactly rocking and concentrated hard” on the first CD.
