U 78 was a German submarine of type VIIC that in World War II by the German navy was used as a training boat and as a power boat for energy.

history

The order for the boat was placed on January 25, 1939 at the Vegesacker shipyard in Bremen . The keel was laid on March 28, 1940, the launch on December 7, 1940. The commissioning under Lieutenant Adolf Dumrese finally took place on February 15, 1941. In the case of the submarines of the German Navy, it was customary for the crew to select a symbol during the training period that was both attached to the submarine tower and worn by the crew on their caps and boats . U 78 carried the side of the cube with the six as a boat-specific symbol.

After its commissioning on February 15, 1941, the boat belonged to the 22nd U-Flotilla in Gotenhafen as a school boat until February 28, 1945 . From March 1, 1945 until its destruction on April 16, 1945, the boat belonged to the 4th U-Flotilla in Stettin as an electricity supplier , but was located in Pillau .

Before it was used as a power boat for energy generation, the U 78 was purely a school boat and did not undertake any activities during its service.

Whereabouts

The boat was used on April 16, 1945 in Pillau on the pier of the sea service station as an electricity supply boat for the Samland Army Group and shot down by Soviet Army artillery. The boat then sank on the pier.
