Jens Adolf Geier (born June 22, 1961 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 and chairman of the SPD group in the S&D parliamentary group since 2017 .

Life

Geier was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1961. He grew up in Essen , went to school there and graduated from the Helmholtz Gymnasium in 1980 . Geier then did his community service at the Arbeiterwohlfahrt and began studying history , literature and political science at the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1982 , which he completed in 1989 with a Magister Artium . After completing his studies, Geier worked as a research assistant for the SPD MEP Detlev Samland until 1992. From 1992 to 1999 he worked for the SPD party executive: first as an adviser to the party chairman Björn Engholm , then to the deputy party chairman Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul . From 1999 to 2001 Geier worked as a public relations officer on the board of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia . From 2001 to 2006 he worked as a project manager and press officer at Projekt Ruhr GmbH . From 2006 until his entry into the European Parliament, Geier worked at Deloitte in the field of real estate problems in the public sector. He is married and has a son from his first marriage.

Political career

Geier joined the SPD in 1977. As a representative of the undogmatic reform socialist wing, he was the deputy federal chairman of the Jusos from 1989 to 1992, where he was responsible for international politics, development cooperation, Europe and the fight against right-wing extremism. Geier helped to set up the European Community Organization of Socialist Youth (ECOSY) as an amalgamation of socialist and social democratic youth organizations in the European Union and was one of the founding members in 1992.

He is a member of the Workers' Welfare Association , the ver.di trade union , the European Union Germany and the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Zollverein Foundation .

After two unsuccessful attempts in the 1999 and 2004 elections , Geier made it into the European Parliament in 2009 . He was re-elected in 2014 and 2019 .

As a member of the European Parliament, Geier is vice chairman of the Committee on Budgets and a member of the delegation for relations with the United States . He is also an alternate member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Delegation for relations with Japan .
