Cold Chisel (English for metal chisel) is an Australian rock band.

Band history

Cold Chisel was founded in 1973 in Adelaide, South Australia, but later moved to Sydney. With their first LP, released in 1978, the band immediately placed themselves in the Australian charts. They had quite a few hits in the 1970s and 1980s. However, their success was largely limited to Australia and New Zealand. Neither in the United States nor in Europe did her records make it into the charts. The live double album Swingshift from 1981 with a mixture of boogie and blues gave the band the opportunity to perform, in Australia they toured with Rod Stewart , in the USA they were with Ted Nugent and Cheap Trick and in Europe they supportedSee Slade . In Germany in 1982 they gave a concert in the Rockpalast series. In Australia in 1982 they only performed in front of sold out houses. In April 1983 there were massive riots at a concert as part of a motorcycle festival.

Despite great success in Australia, the band broke up in 1984. Jimmy Barnes began a successful solo career and has been one of the best-known Australian rock singers ever since, his performance at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics brought him a worldwide audience. Don Walker had some minor successes with the band Catfish in the late 1980s, and he worked with Ian Moss on various projects. Steve Prestwich was part of the touring band of John Farnham for a while . Cold Chisel's records continued to sell well after their breakup in Australia, which was closely related to Jimmy Barnes' career. After compilations and unreleased material appeared on new records for years, the group produced a new album called The Last Wave of Summer in 1998 , which was made popular with a sold out tour through Australia. After a last joint appearance by Cold Chisel in 2005 at a benefit concert for the victims of the seaquake of December 26, 2004 , the band separated a second time.

From a joint appearance in 2009 a collaboration developed again, which did not end with the death of drummer Steve Prestwich in January 2011. A year later, the four remaining band members released the band's seventh studio album entitled No Plans .

Cold Chisel are typical representatives of Australian pub rock . Her music is shaped by the rough voice of her singer Jimmy Barnes and the guitar playing of Ian Moss. The strong rhythm and Jimmy Barnes' voice are the earthy side of the music, but sophisticated texts about everyday life in Australia and pronounced vocals are evidence of a very high artistic standard. In 1993 the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame .
