Flying Colors is a progressive rock - supergroup consisting Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev), Steve Morse ( Dixie Dregs , Deep Purple , Kansas ), Neal Morse ( Spock's Beard , Transatlantic ), Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Planet X ) and Mike Portnoy (Ex- Dream Theater , Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment , OSI , Adrenaline Mob , The Winery Dogs ).

history

In 2008, producer Bill Evans compiled a list of people with whom he wanted to realize his idea of ​​Flying Colors: Mike Portnoy, Steve Morse, Dave LaRue, Neal Morse and producer Peter Collins , who already worked with Rush , Bon Jovi , Elton John and Jewel Kilcher had worked together. After the four musicians and Peter Collins had agreed, the two producers started looking for a singer who could combine the band's different musical styles. Evans and Collins had gone through a list of over 100 different singers when Portnoy suggested Casey McPherson.

After almost a year of planning, the first album to be titled with the band name was completed within nine days in January 2011. In November 2011, the album was mixed by Michael Brauer, who had already worked with the Rolling Stones , Bob Dylan and Coldplay . Flying Colors was released on March 26, 2012. The band name comes from Peter Collins. He said to the musicians: “Gentlemen, you passed with flying colors.” (“People, you passed with flying colors.”).

Tony Conley of Rock Guitar Daily called the first album "an amazing album that covers a huge number of musical styles" and "one of the best debut albums of a band that they have ever heard" .

Rock & Roll Circus magazine rated the album ten out of ten, and the review described the album as follows: “You can't do it better than Flying Colors with their debut. Flying Colors demonstrate the fine art of how a melting pot can produce far more than average goods. (...) The Drummer Magazine chose the debut album of the month, even from rock gig it got great reviews. MusicRadar called the album “really excellent” and Guitar & Bass Magazine described it as “an incredible album” .

Allmusic's Matt Collar wrote in his review:
