Awake (English for: " Wach ") is the third studio album by the American progressive metal band Dream Theater . It was released on September 30, 1994. The album wasranked 390 of the “strongest rock and metal records” by Rock Hard magazinein 2007. Only the two previous Dream Theater albums could place better on this list.

Music genre

Awake is much harder than the previous albums When Dream and Day Unite and Images and Words . The album also sounds darker than its predecessors. The song structures are very complex. In particular, the three parts of “A Mind Beside Itself” show the different influences of the band. Part 1 is an instrumental piece that goes in the direction of ambient , but also contains heavy metal passages. Part 2 is harder again, while Part 3 is more in the moderate rock direction.

Moore's exit

After Dream Theater recorded the album, Kevin Moore announced that he wanted to leave the band, which, according to guitarist John Petrucci, was unexpected. For this reason Moore was of course excluded from the further processes for completing the album (such as mixing) and he was accordingly not seen in the two music videos by Awake .

Because of Moore's departure, the band never played the song "Space-Dye Vest" live until January 15, 2014. Mike Portnoy said Dream Theater will never play the song without Kevin Moore as it is considered his farewell song. It is the last song that Moore wrote. Portnoy also said that Dream Theater would have taken the song off the album even if they had known Moore was leaving the band. However, it was played live for the first time in Portugal on January 15, 2014. Moore has received many offers from Dream Theater to play again with the band, but has turned down every offer so far.

"A Mind Beside Itself"

Songs 4–6 together make up the series “A Mind Beside Itself”. In the CD booklet for Awake , the three songs are listed as such a series, but the songs are listed individually on the back of the CD without mentioning the title “A Mind Beside Itself”. Each of these three songs is also written down in the booklet as a separate song and at concerts the songs are played individually. At the live concert Live Scenes from New York , all three songs were played together as "A Mind Beside Itself". They are titled there as "A Mind Beside Itself Part I", "II" and "III".
