Shadow Gallery is an American progressive metal - band .

history

It emerged from members of the band Sorcerer , which mainly played cover versions of Rush and Yes , among others . After the band was renamed Shadow Gallery , the three remaining musicians Carl Cadden-James (bass, flute), Mike Baker (vocals), Brendt Allman (guitar) and the later joined Chris Ingles (keyboard and guitar) recorded a demo tape. A drum computer took over the drum parts . Then the label Magna Carta signed the band and released the demo as a debut in Europe and Japan .

After Gary Wehrkamp (keyboard, guitar, vocals) was accepted a short time later as a permanent member of the band, Shadow Gallery recorded the album Carved in Stone on their own . The drums were recorded by the studio musician Kevin Soffera. Three years after the debut , Carved was published in Stone .

Another three years later, the album Tyranny was released with Joe Nevolo, who has now been included in the band, on drums. In Tyranny is a concept album that as a theme the conscience of an employee in the arms industry, its action against his former employer and the difficulties he aufhalst thus treated. The musical implementation of the story told is dense and anthemic. DC Cooper ( Royal Hunt ), James LaBrie ( Dream Theater ) and Laura Jaeger contributed vocal parts from the people involved.

After Tyranny , the band continued to work in the studio on side projects such as James LaBries Mullmuzzler , Explorer's Club II, Tribute to Pink Floyd and contributing guitar and keyboard solos for Ayreon as well as further expanding the studio. In 2001 the album Legacy was recorded. Stylistically it follows on from Carved in Stone , which becomes clear at the beginning of the album through the song Cliffhanger 2 . The new album is less “heavy” than Tyranny though . The title First Light has a playing time of over 34 minutes, but is still entertaining, which is due to the numerous breaks and the melodies. Following the release of Legacy , the band went back on side projects and set off again after some time in the studio to the fifth album Room V record. In 2005 Room V , which is thematically related to Tyranny , was released on the InsideOut label . There is a long Pink Floyd medley on the bonus CD of the special edition of the album .

Singer Mike A. Baker died of a heart attack on October 29, 2008 at the age of 45. Despite this dramatic and tragic event - some band members were looking back on 25 years of collaborative musical work with Baker - the band continued their work and released the album Digital Ghosts almost exactly a year later . The newly added singer and guitarist Brian Ashland sang five of the seven songs on the album. It becomes obvious that the band consciously relied on continuity with the new singer after Baker's death: Ashland's singing style differs comparatively little from Baker's and, where he does so, is astonishing because of its great resemblance to Geoff Tate's singing from Queensrÿche . Ralf Scheepers , Clay Barton, Vivien Lalu and Srdjan Brankovic contributed to the album as guest musicians . Joe Nevolo played the drums for only two pieces, all other drum work was done by Gary Wehrkamp.

Shadow Gallery never played live or released a single until 2010. Shadow Gallery gave the first live concert in their band's history on September 5, 2010 in Tannersville, USA, in preparation for a two-week European tour in October 2010.
