Henning Pauly

Henning Pauly , also known as EytschPi42 or HP42 , (born July 25, 1975 in Hirschhausen ) is a German musician , music producer , guitarist and Youtuber who runs the most successful guitar channel on YouTube in the German-speaking area despite its English-language videos. This has over 119,000 subscribers and 35 million clicks on over 2,400 uploaded content.

biography

He became known as a musician with the band Frameshift and other co-productions (for example on the album Babysteps ) with the singer James LaBrie ( Dream Theater ). James LaBrie took over the vocals on the first album. Sebastian Bach sings on the second album, An Absence of Empathy .

He has also released several albums with various bands and worked with other well-known artists such as Michael Sadler from Saga .

After graduating in arranging and music synthesis from  Berklee College of Music  in  Boston in May 2000 and spending ten years as a musician, jingle producer and prog rock producer in Los Angeles , he returned to Germany after the death of his father and bought a house in his own Hometown to set up the 42 studio there.

The YouTube channel

In 2013 he made a series of demonstration videos of Harley Benton effects pedals for the Thomann music store.

At a time when such videos were often presented on YouTube with modest means, he used high image and sound quality from the start.

He set standards in his niche, so more and more manufacturers sent him their guitars and devices for review and demonstration of videos.

For some of his videos, he is paid by manufacturers, emphasizing that he is paid for his time, not for his opinion. This is also evident in his sharp criticism of devices and guitars that do not meet his expectations. Pauly's criticism was several times the reason for a manufacturer to make improvements to the product. An example of this is the elimination of white elements such as the saddle of a guitar on an otherwise black instrument on a popular entry-level guitar, which is now completely black.

He was also involved in the development of devices and their naming, for example the banTamp amplifier series from the Chinese manufacturer Joyo.

Pauly has borrowed and purchased many guitars and amplifiers, which means that manufacturers or luthiers are "exposed". Pauly records his studio videos in a live setup with 10 cameras.

The cameras are operated by his girlfriend Leslie or a guest from a control room.

The videos are usually very detailed, often well over half an hour with outliers of up to an hour (when it comes to extensive devices or a whole series of effects pedals).

By default, almost all of his videos end with the comment "Animals at the end" (sometimes spoken by a guest). Then a clip with animals and their own music will start. This comment also refers to what he believed was YouTube's original purpose, which is: home videos of pets.

In addition to demonstrations and reviews, he also makes videos at music fairs, where he humorously interviews manufacturers' representatives about their new products (often without explaining the product).

There are also occasional performances by artists in his studio, which are then broadcast live on the internet. During these performances, Henning suggests using a different guitar or amplifier for a particular song.

In addition to guitars and related equipment, Pauly occasionally demonstrates and reviews video and recording equipment, or something else that he's very excited about. It sometimes happens that a brand representative or designer comes to his studio to provide additional explanations about a product.

In 2019 Pauly invited a few artists to play a live streaming performance in his studio.

He also worked on the production of an album by the German band Campaign Like Clockwork, with whom he had previously worked. The entire recording process was broadcast live.

In 2020, he ended up starting a weekly podcast with two friends from YouTube called Animals at the end, in which they discuss developments in the guitar industry.

Harley Benton HP42

Pauly was the first musician to own signature guitar of Thomann - own brand Harley Benton got. Their long-term creation was comprehensively documented with videos. Pauly and the Harley Benton team had made this guitar a reality since 2015 and had a lot of trouble with manufacturers who couldn't deliver what they promised.

Thomann's house brand Harley Benton, which gained popularity thanks in part to Pauly's videos, released a Henning Pauly signature guitar in a limited edition of 42 pieces in 2019. In order to buy this guitar, which was of great interest, interested parties had to register, there were almost 700 registrations. The limited edition was sold for 442 euros and came in a case with Pauly's CDs.

Features of the guitar are:

  • Fixed bridge
  • Humbucker pickup on the bridge and a P-90 on the neck.
  • Roasted maple neck
  • Push-push switch for coil split
  • Colored in the green and purple tones of the HP42 logo
  • On the back of the head is a paw print of one of Pauly's dogs.
  • The guitar bears the new Harley Benton logo.
  • A gray, limited edition version was sold in an edition of 60 as the HP42 Oupsie . Thomann had ordered a mahogany neck guitar as a prototype for series production, but was inadvertently supplied with 60 copies. In addition to the color and wood for the neck, it differs in that it contains a different type of nut. Because of the mahogany neck, this guitar (in Pauly's words) sounds a bit fuller / rounder and a little less clear.

In November 2019 Thomann released a series version, the only differences being that the elements are black instead of purple, the inlaid mother-of-pearl HP42 logo in the twelfth fret has disappeared and position points were applied to the fingerboard (the limited edition only had position points on the side of the neck).

The development of this guitar with Pauly's help was extremely important for Thomann and the incentive to develop a similar new series of guitars (Harley Benton Fusion), which for the first time advanced into higher price regions.

Events

Since 2017, Pauly has hosted several multi-day events for YouTube guitarists and guitar brands.

In September 2017 he organized the GuitCon together with Framus / Warwick .

Well-known YouTube guitarists from all over the world gathered in the factory of the guitar / bass guitar manufacturer Framus / Warwick, which also included representatives from various brands.

After disagreements about his role in the event, Pauly withdrew from GuitCon and co-hosted a similar event with Thomann in 2018 called Thomann Gearhead University (TGU). He was not involved in the TGU2019.

Since Pauly preferred to no longer be an organizing broker for such an event, he organized a Youtube guitarist event called 42 Gearstreet One in September 2019. For this purpose, his mother's house and the neighbor's house were also converted into temporary studios.

In 2020, the second Gearstreet is planned for August, which is one of the few offline events due to the COVID-19 pandemic and only takes place with a selected small number of (this time only European) manufacturers and Youtubers due to travel and hygiene regulations becomes.

Trivia

  • What is striking about the videos are a number of running gags and a generally idiosyncratic, sometimes suggestive humor (mostly with the comment "That's what she said!") And a large amount of self-irony . In addition, the videos are technically always of high quality, but surprisingly authentic due to the fact that playing errors on the instruments have not been cut out.
  • Pauly hates it when high-quality guitars are delivered in a cardboard box without a gigbag or case - not because it is unsafe, but because, in his opinion, the experience of unpacking does not correspond to the high investment in money.
  • He has a penchant for extravagant tops (t-shirts and sweaters).
  • The position points on the guitar neck should always be centered, otherwise there will be criticism.
  • Again and again pets (dogs and cats) run into the picture, which distract and amuse both the audience and Pauly and his guests from the content.
