The Thomann is a family business and was 1954 in Treppendorf (today part of the market Burgebrach in Bavaria ) sen by Hans Thomann. founded. With its online shop for musician supplies, the Thomann Cyberstore, it is the music retailer with the highest turnover in the world.

history

1954–1989 Foundation and expansion under Hans Thomann Senior

The Treppendorfer Hans Thomann gave up his previous profession of traveling musician in 1954, in the practice of which he was employed by circuses , among other things , and started his own music business. He studied the trumpet in Würzburg . Despite the rural structure, Hans Thomann opted for a music store in his rural home village. He traveled extensively in the area in the late 1950s and 1960s doing business with marching bands and musicians.

In the 1970s, the music business began to grow, so that more and more living spaces in the family's own courtyard were converted into exhibition space. This was also supported by the emergence of new instruments such as the electronic organ , the electric guitar and the synthesizer . The conversion of living space into business space continued, so that in the 1980s the former barn was used as a lighting department and cardboard store and the former children's room as an office for accounting. At this time Thomann also began to set up recording studios , until 1989 Thomann had 24 studios in southern Germany a. a. set up for broadcasters.

1990–1999 management by Hans Thomann Junior

In 1990 Hans Thomann jun. the eldest son took over the management of his father, who died in 2004. At that time, his four siblings all worked in the family-owned company and were responsible for accounting and IT (Elisabeth) and shipping (Gabi). The Hot Deals brochure was first sent out in 1992 to around 10,000 customers, most of whom came from the region. Today the Hot Deals contain around 2,100 current offers and are printed with a monthly print run of 6,750,000 (as of 2015). In 1996, Thomann was the first music retailer in Germany to open an online store . Incoming e-mails were then printed out, brought to the departments and answered by post. In the first year the website generated a turnover of 800,000 DM .

In 1997, an important expansion step was taken with the takeover of the largest German music mail order company at the time, Roadstar from Eisingen . The number of customers was more than doubled to a good 100,000. Today's entrance area was built in 1998 with the construction of the PA / light hall and new rooms for the studio and drums department. The planning and implementation of the room acoustics for the showrooms with ambiophony took two years. In 1999 a call center was set up. Thomann has been operating two call centers with 40 employees each since 2013, one for the German market and one for abroad.

2000 until today: internationalization

The publication of the Hot Deals in Great Britain in 2000 brought a music magazine that had the Hot Deals as a supplement into distress as it was boycotted by a number of English advertisers . Until the end of 2006, no British music magazine accepted any more Thomann advertisements. In 2001, the 15-employee Thomann Audio Professionell department was founded to install audio and PA systems in theaters, town halls, museums, discos and similar buildings.

In 2003 a logistics center with 4800 m² with a capacity of 5400 parcels per shift was built. The number of customers roughly doubled to 9 million between 2004 and 2017.

In 2005 the largest expansion measures so far took place. A container warehouse with over 10,000 pallet spaces on an area of 7700 m², a four-story office building and new exhibition rooms for the guitar, brass and string departments were built.

In 2016, the expansion of the dispatch center began with an estimated investment volume of 60 million euros.
