With his article on Web 2.0 , he made a significant contribution to popularizing this catchphrase .

history

O'Reilly Media published in 1992, when there were only a few hundred sites throughout the network was the first book on the Internet. In the book itself, an entire chapter was devoted to the Internet. O'Reilly Media also created the first web portal, the Global Network Navigator , or GNN for short , in 1993 . This site, the first ever to advertise, was sold to AOL in 1995 .

When O'Reilly learned in 1997 that the book Programming Perl had been one of the top 100 books in the Borders bookstore the previous year , but was barely noticed by the computer industry, he held a conference to promote Perl. He soon realized that other books by his company were also bestsellers, but were not noticed by the industry. In 1998 he then invited several leaders of relevant projects to a meeting. This meeting was originally called the freeware summit , but later came to be known as the Open Source Summit , as this gathering saw open source as the new umbrella term for the movement. The O'Reilly Open Source Convention , which includes the Perl Conference, is O'Reilly's main event today.

In 2001 there was an upset between Tim O'Reilly and Amazon , when O'Reilly led the protest against Amazon's one-click patent and in particular criticized Amazon's actions against competitor B & N.com . The protest ended with a visit by Tim O'Reilly and Jeff Bezos to Washington, DC , where they lobbyed for patent reform. Since then, Amazon has applied for additional patents, but has not used them aggressively.
