Evgeny Morozov ( Belarusian Яўген Марозаў , Jauhen Marosau; Russian Евгений Морозов , Evgeni Morozov; * 1984 in Salihorsk ) is a Belarusian publicist who publishes in English . He deals with the political and social effects of technology. He criticizes the naivety of the assumption that the Internet is democratic per se and brings political change to authoritarian states . Rather, the supply of needed surveillance technology to repressive regimes such as arms trade are considered.

Life

With a grant from George Soros' Open Society Institute , Morozov moved to Bulgaria and also worked in Berlin.

Morozov is a Fellow of the New America Foundation and is currently researching the history of the Internet at Harvard University (as of 2016). He was previously a Yahoo Fellow at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University . In July 2009 he spoke at the TED Conference .
