The Global Network Navigator (GNN) was the very first web portal to summarize content. It later became both the first commercial website and the first to display “clickable” advertising (now known as banner ads ). The first ever internet advertisement was sold by GNN to the law firm Heller, Ehrman, White and McAuliffe and linked to www.hewm.com/en/index.html.

GNN was founded in May 1993 by Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty of O'Reilly Media (originally O'Reilly & Associates) at a time when there were fewer than 500 websites worldwide . In August 1993 the service was started at the InterOp in San Francisco . GNN saw itself as “a new experiment in online publishing” (German for example: a new experiment in the field of internet publishing). Potential customers were advised that an internet connection, a web browser and the internet address of GNN or a local copy of the GNN website were required. In 1995, GNN was sold to America Online (AOL).
