history
Foundation and first successes
Dune was founded in 1994 by the Münster-based DJ Oliver Froning together with the producers Jens Oettrich and Bernd Burhoff. The name of the project was inspired by the original English title of the science fiction film Der Wüstenplanet . The first songs, which were mainly oriented towards Happy Hardcore , included the more instrumental Hardcore Vibes with little vocals and the cover version of the Rozalla title Are You Ready to Fly? with guest singer Tina Lagao, who later became the front woman under the name Tina Lacebal. The accompanying album Dune was released in mid-1995 on Urban Records . Froning's niece Janine, then eleven, spoke the lyrics on the album. In 1995 a new version of the instrumental song Can't Stop Raving , which was already on the first album, was released , but this time with Tina Lacebal's vocals, which were heavily modified by the vocoder . All three singles from the first album reached the top 15 in the German and Dutch charts.
At the beginning of 1996 Verena von Strenge , who previously only worked as a background dancer, joined the band as a permanent singer. In 1996 the second album Expedicion followed , from which the singles Rainbow to the Stars , Hand in Hand and Million Miles from Home come. The album was more successful than its predecessor in German-speaking countries and the Netherlands and reached number four in Hungary . Million Miles from Home was the official song for the 30th birthday of Star Trek in Germany . The music charts in Great Britain could be reached for the first time hand in hand .
First classical album
At the end of 1996 the band made a rabid style change from happy hardcore to classical orchestral music. The cover version of Queen's hit Who Wants to Live Forever together with the London Session Orchestra reached number two on the German single charts. The album Forever , recorded in London's Abbey Road Studios , was released in December 1996 by Orbit Records , Burhoff's record label , and led the orchestra as an official cooperation. Like the single, it reached number two in Germany and became the band's most successful album. It was awarded a gold record that same year and the single went platinum. The follow-up single Nothing Compares 2 U (originally by Sinéad O'Connor ) flopped compared to its predecessor. The planned third single Somebody (originally by Depeche Mode ) was then dropped.
Verena von Strenge separated from the band during this success, due to the title of their first solo single Finally Alone and internal disputes, it is assumed that the separation was carried out in a dispute. Until the summer of 1998 there were no further releases by the band.
New singer and second classical album
In mid-1998 two new singles by Dune were released, Keep the Secret in a dance style with influences from pop music and Electric Heaven in an electro-funk style. Both singles were released as a guest singer in cooperation with Vanessa Hörster and were not commercially successful. The planned album 5 with Vanessa as a permanent singer never appeared, which is why she left Dune again.
Thereupon Dune released the classical album Forever and Ever in late 1998 , again recorded with the London Session Orchestra . The album and the accompanying lead single with the vocals of Tina Lacebal, who had already participated in 1995, were a flop.
Reunion with Verena and the end of the band
In November 1999 they reunited with Verena von Strenge, from which the single Dark Side of the Moon was born. However, with number 49 in the German charts, it was unable to build on old successes. The album Reunion , announced for 2000, was not released due to legal problems with the planned single Heaven . Instead, only a largely unsuccessful remake of their hit single Hardcore Vibes with Trubblemaker and the compilation History , which contained the songs of the planned reunion album, which had already been completed , were released.
In 2003 the last release as a band took place, the 2003 remake of their song Rainbow to the Stars in the course of many re-releases of 90s songs. A new album was planned, but was not realized. An official dissolution was never announced.
Dune as a pseudonym
Oliver Froning performed occasionally in the following years and since 2014 regularly as a DJ under the pseudonym Dune. In September 2016 a remake of Magic Carpet Ride was released in the happy hardcore style, produced by Froning alone with vocals recorded in 2014 by Kate Wild . Since January 2017, Oliver Froning and Bernd Burhoff have been arguing in court about the rights to use the name Dune . No agreement had yet been reached in July 2018.
