With well over 13 million records sold internationally, the band is still one of the most successful dance acts from Germany.

Band history

Musical debut (2001–2002)

The group was founded in summer 2001 by DJ Novus in collaboration with Suprime Music (Axel Konrad). The singles Hit Me and Are U Ready were created . The producer team included Axel Konrad, Ole Wierk, Markus Schaffarzyk ( DJ Novus ), Verena Rehm , David Sobol ( Betty Blitzkrieg ) and Lou Bega , who has worked on more than 13 titles in the band since 2002.

Shortly afterwards, producers Axel Konrad and Ole Wierk became aware of Melanie Münch ( Mell ), who was then 20 years old from Ingolstadt, and asked her to record some songs with them in the studio. The result was the third single Moonlight Shadow , a cover version of the Mike Oldfield classic. With this, the formation achieved its commercial breakthrough. Then Universal Music took the band under contract. Groove Coverage entered the top 10 of the German single charts on July 1, 2002 and achieved third place in the sixth chart week. They were awarded a gold record for over 250,000 records sold , as well as a nomination by the Echo . In addition to Germany, the project with the single Moonlight Shadow also made it into the official charts in Austria , Switzerland , the Netherlands , Belgium and Australia .

From then on Mell was the voice of the band. But since she was involved in family planning at that time, the model Henrika Spillner was first hired as the front woman for the stage and also appeared in the video for Moonlight Shadow , followed by the then 18-year-old Verena Rehm , who was on stage until 2003 and featured in the music videos for God Is A Girl and The End . Rehm still works as a songwriter, producer and second voice for the band today. Singer Mell has been on stage herself since October 2003 and was first seen in the music video for Poison .

Simultaneously with the fourth single God Is a Girl , which u. a. At number eight in the German charts, Groove Coverage also released their first album CoverGirl at the end of November 2002 , which made it to number 39 in Germany and number 43 in Austria.

Second album and further successes (2003-2004)

After the fifth single The End was released in March 2003 , the sixth single Poison was released in November 2003 , a cover version of the Alice Cooper classic from 1989. The single stayed in the top 20 of the German single charts for eleven weeks and reached number three in Austria and number 51 in the Netherlands. With the song they also made it into the charts in Great Britain and Ireland, which helped the band to their first chart entry in these countries. The band only got approval for a re-recording of the title after a year of waiting from Alice Cooper . The version became the commercially most successful cover of an Alice Cooper song since 1989. At over 90,000 euros, the accompanying music video was the band's most expensive to date and was shot over 4 days in the summer of 2003 in Switzerland by NeonNeon / BeatReabman. Directed by Daniel Siegler, who was also responsible for music videos for Silbermond and Tokio Hotel . In the video, singer Mell lies in a black basin filled with water from which only her face can be seen. At the time, this had the background of hiding the figure of the singer, as, according to the music industry, she did not fit into the norm. DJ Novus also publicly complained in a TV interview that front woman Mell was extremely retouched for all CD covers and press photos at that time in order to match the ideal image. The video for Poison was also censored in some countries because, according to the index, it contains scenes of a suspected creature such as in the film Kill Bill .

In March 2004 the third single and the corresponding album of the same name 7 Years and 50 Days were released. The song made it to number 16 in the German single charts in April 2004. In addition to Verena Rehm, Jessica Schaffer (Jessy), the sister of singer Mell, can also be heard as backing vocal in the song . The song was written by Ole Wierk and Lou Bega . At the same time, the album made it to number 15 in the German album charts and was at position 12 in Austria. The pop ballad She , also released as a single, is a cover version of the Christmas carol Stern über Bethlehem by Alfred Hans Zoller . The song was on the original album 7 Years and 50 Days as ??? (Question mark) listed. Originally it did not contain any text , which was added for the special edition of the album. As the first published ballad of the band, She entered the German charts on August 9, 2004 and once again made a top 20 entry in Germany and Austria. The sixth and final single Runaway made it into the top 20 of the German single charts. Reporter Kai Ebel plays a small role in the video for the song .

Decline in record sales and hiatus (2005–2008)

In August 2005 the ninth single Holy Virgin was released . This title is a cover version of the title Fata Morgana by the Austrian group Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung from 1986. The music video shows model Kader Loth in the lead role. The song made it to number 12 in Austria. The next single, On the Radio , a cover version of the title Mann im Mond by the group Die Prinzen from 1991, was released in early March 2006. Before that, Groove Coverage made a mark against illegal downloading of music titles and published the alleged song On the Radio on the Internet , which later turned out to be Let it Be , from the album 21st Century . The original of the song reached 21st place in Germany. The eleventh single 21st Century Digital Girl is a remake based on Bad Religion's 21st Century Digital Boy and only made it to 41st place in the Top 100. The third album, 21st Century , was released at the same time as the single on July 8, 2006. In Germany, the album was 39th, in Austria 24th. In both charts, however, the album quickly passed from the hit lists.

The single Because I Love You was released in November 2007, as was the first greatest hits album, which includes all hit singles as well as two new tracks and exclusive remixes. The album could no longer build on its old successes and failed to make it into the German album top 100. This was followed by a release hiatus of about three years, with a cover version of the title Somewhere Over The Rainbow appeared in 2008 under the pseudonym Panzer Hawaii .
