Star over Bethlehem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stern über Bethlehem is a spiritual Christmas carol written by Alfred Hans Zoller in 1964.

Origin and reception

The song Stern über Bethlehem is one of the popular Christmas and carol singing songs in Germany. Alfred Hans Zoller composed it in 1964 in the context of his choir work in Reutti near Neu-Ulm. The song belongs to the genre of the New Spiritual Song .

Due to its popularity in the field of church choirs for children and young people, it found its way into the regional church parts of the Evangelical Hymnal (EG) of Baden / Alsace / Lorraine (No. 551), Bavaria / Thuringia (No. 545), Hessen-Nassau and Kurhessen- Waldeck (No. 542), Lower Saxony / Bremen and Oldenburg (No. 544), Palatinate (No. 551), Reformed Church and Rhineland / Westphalia / Lippe (No. 546) and Württemberg (No. 540). In the Catholic hymn book Gotteslob published in 2013 , it was included in the root section (No. 261) after it was only found in various diocesan appendices in the previous book Gotteslob (1975) (including Diocese Limburg No. 814, Diocese Würzburg No. 955, “Aachener Appendix “ No. 005). In the Mennonite hymn book it is represented under number 265. Various choir or song books such as Cantate II , edited by the workshop Neues Geistliches Lied Bamberg , have it in their Christmas sections.

Edits

The composer Ansgar Kreutz received an editing permit from the original publisher, so that Kreutz could edit the song for choir and accompaniment in 2006. The arrangement can be performed in four versions: choir and keyboard instrument, choir and band, choir and orchestra, and choir and wind orchestra.

Cover version

The tune was used in the 2004 English language song entitled She by Groove Coverage .
