Alfred Hans Zoller

Alfred Hans Zoller (born October 6, 1928 in Neu-Ulm ; † October 14, 2006 in Neu-Ulm) was a German composer , jazz pianist , cantor and organist .

Life

From 1956 he was organist, in 1960 also cantor in Reutti near Neu-Ulm. There he founded the “St. Margret Singers ”, a gospel choir, which helped to ensure that elements of jazz and“ black music ”found dissemination and recognition in German evangelical church services . He composed numerous New Spiritual Songs .

Impact history

Zoller's song from the “Star over Bethlehem” found its way into some regional parts of the regional church Evangelical Hymn book (EG) (e.g. Bavaria : number 545; Hessen-Nassau : no. 542; Württemberg : number 540). In the Catholic prayer and hymn book Praise God the song is printed under number 261. In the Mennonite hymn book it can be found under number 265. In some communities it is also sung by the carol singers . It is one of the most important Christmas hymns of modern times.
