Bill Sienkiewicz , actually Boleslav (William) Felix Robert Sienkiewicz [ɕɛn'kʲevʲiʧ] (born May 3, 1958 in Blakely , Pennsylvania ) is an American comic book artist and illustrator.

Life and work

Sienkiewicz, who comes from a family of Polish descent, grew up first in Blakey, Pennsylvania and later in Hainesville, New Jersey, where he also attended school. This was followed by studies at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts in Newark, New Jersey.

After graduating, Sienkiewicz, whose artistic role models include Curt Swan and Jack Kirby , began working as a full-time comic artist in the early 1980s. His first engagements were as an illustrator for Marvel Comics , for whom he initially illustrated series such as Moon Knight (1981-1983) and Chris Claremont's New Mutants (1983) as well as a comic adaptation of the film Dune . After Sienkiewicz first worked for Epic Illustrated magazine in 1986 as the author of a story he had painted - namely the story Slow Dancer - the eight-part mini-series Elektra , written by Frank Miller , followed in the same year : Assassin , which was a great commercial and artistic one Success became. As an illustrator, Sienkiewicz created a biography of guitarist Jimi Hendrix (1995) as well as the albums Charity of Night by Bruce Cockburn (1996), Bobby Digital In Stereo by RZA (1998) and Business As Usual by EPMD ( 1998) and Voodoo Child . There were also engagements for magazines such as Entertainment Weekly and Spin Magazine and the illustration of Herman Melville 's classic novel Moby Dick for the Classics Illustrated series .

In 1998, Sienkiewicz broadened his range of activities by making his first children's book author appearance with the picture book Santa: My Life & Times (An Illustrated Autobiography) . The awards he has received for his work include the Eagle Award (1981, 1982, 1983, 1987), Kirby Award (1987), Inkpot Award (1981) and the Eisner Award (2004).
