The Berlin Boom Orchestra is a German reggae and ska band that positions itself on the left-wing political spectrum.

Band history

Berlin Boom Orchestra in SO36 Berlin 2015

The Berlin Boom Orchestra was founded in Berlin in spring 2006 . Some members came from the Berlin skaband Skaquadrat, which had disbanded in 2005. After starting out in the Kreuzberg club Kato , the band now plays all over Germany and has become one of the most popular German-speaking ska bands. Her single Achtung, Achtung! The predominantly German lyrics come from Filou, the band's singer, and often deal with socio-political issues.

At the European Reggae Contest 2009, the band reached the Germany finals and took 1st place in the final, which took place on June 5, 2009 in the Berlin club Yaam .

In 2010 the album Hin und Weg was released. On December 11, 2010, the band received first prize from the German Pop Foundation at the German Rock & Pop Prize 2010 in the categories of Best Reggae Band and Best Reggae Album .

In autumn 2014, the Berlin Boom Orchestra released the single Retro on the Berlin label Springstoff as a preview of an album announced for 2015.

On October 3, 2015, the band released their third studio album "Kopf, Stein, Pflaster". On the album, which consists of 17 tracks, guests can hear Refpolk and Darlino on the track "Mörder" as feature guests .

The band's fourth studio album entitled »Reggae Punks« was released again on March 1, 2019 on Springstoff . It contains 16 tracks.

Political statements

The Berlin Boom Orchestra expresses itself both in its song lyrics and in interviews on a range of political issues. The band is committed against homophobia and sexism. In addition, the band supports the campaign "Make Some Noise - Sexism and Homophobia out of my music", which claims to try to offer an alternative to the homophobic-sexist mainstream. The situation of refugees in Europe is mentioned frequently. In the songs "Nein Mann" and "Reisefieber" from the album Hin und Weg , as well as in the songs "Mörder" from the album Kopf, Stein, Pflaster , German and European asylum policy is criticized as repressive on the one hand and how society deals with it in question . The band has performed repeatedly at fundraising events for refugees.

Another topic is how society deals with National Socialism . Among other things, the song “Not Egal” from the album Hin und Weg deals with looking away when there is right-wing violence. The band has appeared at numerous rallies against right-wing violence. In the video "Potato Nation", which is only published on Facebook , the Berlin Boom Orchestra expresses criticism of the Pegida movement. For the band, dealing with the history of National Socialism also includes dealing with anti-Semitism outside of the neo-Nazi scene and thus also dealing with the Middle East conflict. In the songs “Umsollen” and “Jerusalem” from the album Kopf, Stein, Pflaster, the band complains about an undifferentiated approach to the subject, both socially and in the press. After the singer of the band, Filou, criticized the makers of the video “Anti-German” by the rapper Kaveh on Facebook (private), an article about the reactions to this video was published in the newspaper Junge Welt , accusing Filou of “Jewish leftists like Noam Chomsky , Ilan Pappe and Judith Butler , who criticize the Israeli government for calling them ' anti-Semitic Jews ' ”. The article does not name any sources.
