Mark Foggo's Skasters is a ska band from Liverpool / Amsterdam founded in 1987 .

The band has been an integral part of the European ska scene since the late 1980s and is regularly mentioned in the same breath as The Hotknives (GB), Mr. Review (NL) and The Toasters (USA). Mark Foggo's Skasters have released numerous albums, but the real attraction of the band are the concerts and stage shows.

Music genre

The music is characterized by a fast, very danceable style. Singer Mark Foggo is known for his special show talent and his staring look. In the stage shows, he also takes on the role of entertainer and heater.

Band history

Beginning in Amsterdam

In 1979 Mark Foggo (* 1950, Liverpool) moved from London to Amsterdam, where he founded the Skaband Mark Foggo & the Secret Meeting . The first release was the low-budget single New Shoes , which was a great success in the Netherlands. The band was then signed by Polydor . Several new editions of the successful single and the debut album Speeding My Life Away followed, as well as extensive tours through Europe. In 1983, A State of Mind (Boni Records) was officially released as a solo album. The success of the record caught the attention of EMI Records . Two years later the LP Weapons and Guitars was released , which, due to musical specifications by EMI, is more in the rock area.

Founding of Skasters and change of label

After the contract ended, the band switched to the British label Skank Records. In 1989 the album Ska Pig came out under the new band name Mark Foggo's Skasters , with which it was possible to build on earlier successes. Since then, the band has been touring all over Europe again, especially Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The first live album Captain Skarlet (1991, Skank Records) was recorded on the Ska Pig tour . For Couldn't Play Ska , the band switched to Universe Records in 1993 , where the second live album Lucky to be Alive (1994, Universe) was released the following year. Then Mark Foggo founded his own independent label Skanky'Lil Records , under which all new Skasters albums and numerous re-releases of the older albums that were out of print were released. In 2000, Mark Foggo and musicians from Mr. Review and other Dutch skabands founded the Babyshakers , a ska band that is strongly oriented towards rockabilly and rock 'n' roll . This was followed by an extensive joint tour under the name Dutch-Ska Explosion , on which, in addition to Mr. Review, Mark Foggo's Skasters and The Babyshakers, The Beatbusters also performed, a band also partly made up of Skasters and Mr. Review musicians. In 2001 a Best Of album was released (CD Skanky'Lil, LP VOR / Grover ) and in the following years, in addition to numerous concerts, the three studio albums The Missionaries of Ska (2002), You Shot Me (2005) and It's Only a Game (2006). In 2006 the longtime Skasters guitarist Gerben Mr. Fish Rienk Visser announced that in future he would devote himself fully to the ska jazz band Skaguitar, which he founded together with Bob van Houten ( Rude Rich and the High Notes ) . In the meantime, however, he is also regularly active again for Mark Foggo's Skasters (as of 2010). The second Japan tour also took place in 2006, and the best of album Hello Ska People (2006, Phantom) was released for the Japanese market . After more than 20 years there was a new release on a major label in 2010 with Mad ( V2 Records ) . Although some records were released as solo albums under the name Mark Foggo , the normal line-up of the Skasters is usually active both at the concerts and in the studio. The line-up of the Skasters has changed several times since the early 1980s. Of the founding members, only Mark Foggo as namesake and saxophonist Paul Berding are still there today. In addition to his commitment to the Skasters, Berding is also active for other ska and jazz bands. For example, he recorded the baritone saxophone for the 2011 Mr. Review album XXV . At concerts, the Skasters musicians regularly supplement the line-up of other ska bands such as The Toasters or Mr. Review, in return, the Skasters line-up is often supplemented by guest musicians from other bands. Since 2010 Mark Foggo has played several concerts with the German ska band Babayaga as a backing band . In autumn 2011 a series of concerts with The Hotknives (UK) followed, playing a mixed set of songs from both bands.
