The Toasters , founded in 1981 in New York , one of the world's most famous Ska - bands .

Band history

The central figure of the toasters is the Englishman Robert Hingley. He had emigrated to the USA and founded the band in 1981. This made them one of the first groups of the third wave of ska and of particular importance for the development of later ska in the USA and the emerging crossover styles such as ska-punk and skacore .

Hingley also founded the label Moon Ska in 1983 , which was to become the most important scale label worldwide. The label dissolved at the beginning of the 21st century. The band recorded most of their albums there. The successors are Moon Ska Europe and Megalith Records .

In 1983 the band released their first single, Beat Up . Two years later a demo EP ("Recriminations") followed in collaboration with the famous musician Joe Jackson , with whom they should work more often.

In 1987 the group released their debut album "Skaboom" . From then on an album was released almost every year and their sprawling tours through Europe and North America made them one of the most famous ska bands in the world.

Music genre

The Toasters' repertoire is broad and includes traditional dancehall numbers, but fast pieces dominate, often (and especially when performing live) with an unmistakable punk influence .

Band lineups

After numerous changes in the line-up, the group's front man, guitarist and singer Robert "Bucket" Hingley is the only remaining member of the original line-up. Outstanding musicians in the line-up have long been the Jamaican singer and toaster Jack Ruby Jr. and the trumpeter Brian Sledge.
