history

Originally it was 8 of the 29 children of the Jamaican reggae singer Denroy Morgan , who emigrated to New York , who performed under the name Morgan Heritage. The children were all born in Brooklyn , New York , but also spent much of their time in Springfield , Massachusetts, where they attended high school. They started recording in their father's recording studio in the early 1990s, initially mostly on the weekends while they were still in school. The result, produced by her father, was the first single Wonderful World , which was released in 1991, soon followed by the debut album Growing Up .

The next year their performance at the Reggae Sunsplash Festival was such an impressive success that the MCA label immediately offered them a contract. The album Miracle , which was produced for MCA until 1994 , was quite a disappointment. "It was too poppy, with a rigid view of the mainstream, the press complained."

In the following year, Morgan Heritage managed to rediscover their own musical roots during a tour of the Ivory Coast . They separated from MCA, traveled to Jamaica in late 1995 and began working on the next album there. The whole family moved to Saint Thomas in Jamaica, the father's home. In cooperation with the well-known Jamaican producers Lloyd "King Jammy" James and Robert "Bobby Digital" Dixon , Protect Us Jah was created and released in 1997. The band also took a big step forward musically, and with classic roots reggae and spiritually influenced lyrics came the great success for Morgan Heritage. In the same year they reduced their formation to the five aforementioned siblings.

Since moving to Jamaica and switching to VP Records , they released one album after the other, Don't Haffi Dread (1999) and More Teachings (2001) continue the roots reggae style, Three in One (2003) expanded the spectrum slightly and then there was a guest appearance by the alternative rock band Good Charlotte .

With the next album, the development of their musical style continued. Various influences from Brooklyn, New England and Jamaica flowed into the music of Morgan Heritage when the album Full Circle 2005 combined reggae with elements of ska , hip-hop and Latin music . Rounding out it was a guest appearance by Damian Marley and dancehall - Remix , the LMS together with Bounty Killer and Sizzla contributed.

In the spring of 2008, Mission in Progress , the tenth studio album by Morgan Heritage, was released.

In addition, several compilations appeared under the title Morgan Heritage and Friends . The Morgan siblings produced songs together with Beres Hammond , Capleton , Luciano , Sly & Robbie , Gentleman , Toots and the Maytals , Anthony B. , Jah Cure and many other reggae greats. They also built a reputation for being an excellent live band. Morgan Heritage often tours with LMS, another Morgan family band that is more hip-hop. Occasionally father Denroy Morgan also comes on stage.

The album Strictly Roots , which was released in 2015, won the 2016 Grammy Award in the category "Best Reggae Album".
