David Michael Rodigan MBE (born June 24, 1951 in Hanover ) is a British reggae and dancehall (radio) DJ .

Life

Rodigan was born in Hanover in 1951 as the son of a Scottish soldier stationed in Germany. After his father had done military service in various countries, his parents moved to England in 1959. As a teenager he began to play records in youth centers and clubs. His first contact with Jamaican music was, according to his own statement, My Boy Lollipop by Millie Small in 1964. Inspired by this, he began to buy and play ska records. After completing his studies, he started as a radio DJ with the BBC in 1978 , but switched to Capitol Radio in 1979 . At this time he also began to appear in clubs as a reggae selector . After establishing contacts with Jamaican artists and selectors, there was a “radio soundclash ” in 1985 with his Jamaican colleague Barry G from JBC 1. In 1990 he switched from Capitol Radio to Kiss FM . In November 2012, David Rodigan left the station Kiss FM because he did not see reggae adequately represented in the radio broadcasts. Most recently, his broadcast was postponed to midnight. Since February 17, 2013, David Rodigan's broadcast has been broadcast every Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on BBC Radio 1Xtra .

His program Rodigan's Rockers has been broadcast by the British army broadcaster BFBS since 1984 , which can also be received in Germany on VHF . This made Rodigan known in Germany and one of the sources of inspiration for early German sound systems .

In the video game Grand Theft Auto IV , Rodigan hosts the radio station RamJam FM.

At the 2012 British New Year Ceremonies, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to broadcasting over the past 30 years .
