Mutabor is a band from Berlin that was founded in 1991.

style

With their mix of styles of punk rock and various folk influences, Mutabor have often been listed as a German representative of folk punk since their first official publication Mutabor (1997) . With the second official release JaJa (2001) the band expanded their musical spectrum towards pop , reggae and ska .

Band name

The name is derived from Latin - mutabor means "I will be changed". The spell of the same name from the fairy tale Kalif Storch by Wilhelm Hauff served as inspiration for the naming.

Band history

In 1990 Axel Steinhagen , singer, songwriter and later head of the band, and Tilmann Walter met in their hometown of Wismar and decided to form a band with a flautist and an accordionist. The program included old student and pub songs from the songbook Der schoben Turm . At first the band had no name, then they called themselves the vigilante group . Appearances in student clubs followed.

In autumn 1991 Axel Steinhagen and Tilmann Walter went to Berlin to study and continue to make music. The violinist Helen Bauerfeind and the flautist Katja Kühler joined the university in 1991 via the bulletin board . During this time, Axel Steinhagen began to write his own pieces of music in German for the group. In 1992 Katja Kühler left the band and was replaced by Anita Ratai. The band has officially been called Mutabor since 1992 .

In 1993, Mutabor was expanded to include Markus Gerhards, who initially played on drums specially made for the band. (After Tilmann Walter left in 1996, he switched to the electric guitar.) They began touring in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

Between 1993 and 1994 the band recorded pieces for the MCs Homunculus (1993) and Homunculus (1994), which are now very popular among collectors, in a Kreuzberg studio in several recording sessions . These were never sold on a large scale, only offered at concerts. The group released some pieces from it three years later on their first album, including the song There is no love , which became the band's trademark. The old versions differ considerably from the album titles, however, as the band played without bass and without conventional drums in their early days.

At the end of 1994, the producer David Bronner became aware of the band at a concert in the Berlin Café Zapata and recorded an album with her in Vienna on his own, which was performed as an MC until 1997 under the title Dreh dich, Tanz! was also only sold at concerts. A record deal with Virgin Germany followed. In 1997 the official debut Mutabor appeared , which is largely identical to the previous MC. Many of the pieces published on the album such as Liebe , Lump and Amsterdam are still among the Mutabor classics and should not be missing from any concert.

In 1995 Jens-Uwe Zietz, also from Wismar, joined as bassist. With the instrumentation from back then - vocals , flute , violin , guitar , bass and drums  - Mutabor still play today.

The first productions were characterized by the typical recorder punk rockfolk style - a term that was created by a music critic at the time and is still used today to characterize the style of the band. Later elements of various musical styles, for example reggae , ska and pop , were added.

In 2000 Mutabor produced the mini-album Das Eine on their own label MakanaBeatRecords , which, like Homunculus, was only released as a fan edition in limited numbers. Most of the pieces from it were released in 2001 in a slightly different form on the band's second regular album entitled JaJa . This was followed in 2003 by the double album Mutabor Live (in the same year Anita Ratai left the band temporarily because of a baby break), in 2004 the album Individuum and in 2005 the DVD Mutology . Under the motto Songs come true , the band organized a trip to Amsterdam with 250 fans in 2005. After the EP Welcome to the Template (Rabazco Records), Mutabor broke up in 2006 for the time being. The farewell concert on July 7, 2006 in Yaam in Berlin was released on DVD in 2007 under the title Amazegenalo .

Steinhagen released his first solo album Ich ist ein anders on Stock & Stein in 2008 under the pseudonym Axl Makana . At the concerts that Axl Makana gave regularly between 2007 and 2008 with his band Ohrkesta , there were repeated guest appearances by Helen Bauerfeind and Anita Ratai. This gave the impetus to the reunification of Mutabors in 2009. Under the motto The Spirits I Called , the group went on tour all over Germany. Then Helen Bauerfeind left the band.

Between November 2009 and May 2010 the last studio album so far was recorded in the Berlin Phlexton studio. Das Blaue was published by Buschfunk on October 1, 2010. After completing the Blue Tour, the band stopped working together again in September 2011.

On the occasion of the 22nd anniversary, the anthology or best-of album Her mit dem Schöne Leben was produced from October to December 2012 in Berlin and Vienna - again by David Bronner (A) - which also contains 3 new productions. It was released on March 1st, 2013 by MakanaBeatRecords / Soulfood. At the same time, the Her with the beautiful life tour started .
