Dawn Penn (* 1952 in Kingston , Jamaica as Dawn Pickering ) is a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae singer.

life and career

As a child she learned the violin and piano and won a talent competition at the age of 17. Her own version of Willie Cobbs' blues song You Don't Love Me was released on Studio One in the late sixties and became a hit in Jamaica. She recorded other songs, including the Blue Yes Blue produced by Prince Buster . In the early 1970s she moved to the Virgin Islands where she worked as an accountant . An attempted comeback in 1987 failed.

In 1994 the duo Steely & Clevie produced a dancehall version of their 1967 song called You Don't Love Me (No, No, No) . The song hit music charts worldwide and an album called No, No, No was recorded. The follow-up single couldn't achieve the same success. In July 1996 another album called Come Again was released .

Jackie Mittoo, Jamaican keyboardist and founding member of the Skatalites , for his part covered this rocksteady song and made an instrumental version of it. Ghetto Organ , appeared on the 1972 album Macka Fat .
