history

In 1967, Dawn Penn recorded the song You Don’t Love Me in Jamaica , the original song by the American blues musician Willie Cobbs , published in 1960. Cobbs was in turn inspired by the song She’s Fine, She’s Mine by Bo Diddley from 1955 to let.

Penn's version of the song was produced by Coxsone Dodd and recorded at Studio One in Kingston . Dodd had lived in the United States for some time , from where he brought R&B records to Jamaica, which he played in his sound system shows .

While the Jamaican recording used elements of Cobbs' lyrics and melody, the song now appeared in the then still young Rocksteady style. The recording became a hit in Jamaica. With her other records , Dawn Penn could not build on this success, and she withdrew from the music business.

In the late 1980s she then tried a comeback in Jamaica. But only the new recording of their old hit in 1994 became a success. The new recording entitled You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No) , produced by the duo Steely & Clevie in dancehall style, became a worldwide hit. Penn, Cobbs and Diddley were named as authors.

In the Billboard Hot 100 the piece rose to number 58, in the “Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles” charts to number 42, in the “Hot R&B Airplay” charts to number 41, and in the “Hot 100 Airplay” - Charts at number 45. The song was also very successful in Europe and New Zealand.
