Professional play-offs
The Professional Play-offs were a qualifying tournament for the Snooker Main Tour held between 1988 and 1990 in the Guild Hall of Preston , England . A tournament was held annually, with seven to eight players per tournament qualifying for the coming Main Tour season.

The professional play-offs were held for the first time in 1988. The tournament consisted of seven games in the best of 19 frames mode , with the winners qualifying for the upcoming Main Tour season. Amateurs met Main Tour professionals.
A year later, the number of laps was increased to three and at the same time the number of participants was increased to 33. While the first two rounds were played in the best of 9 frames mode , the last, decisive round was played again in the best of 19 frames mode . The winners of the second round met Main Tour professionals who wanted to keep their status; the winners qualified for the next season.
In 1990 there were also three rounds, the number of participants increased at the same time. After two rounds in the Best of 9 Frames mode , the winners again met outgoing Main Tour professionals in round three; the winners qualified for the next season on the Main Tour.
