Raggabund is a Munich dancehall - reggae band.

history

Raggabund is a German urban & dancehall formation that was founded in Munich in 2000. The brothers Paco Mendoza (El Criminal) and Don Caramelo have Latin American roots and are the main singers and songwriters.

Don Caramelo started his musical career with the hip-hop group Blumentopf before he became the lead vocalist with the Mestizo & Crosso association Les Babacools in 1995. Paco Mendoza first made reggae & rock music and had already made some solo recordings. Both were strongly influenced by the Latin American reggae scene in the 90s and sang mainly in Spanish. The idea for the name Raggabund came from the term Vagabund, which was supposed to describe the constant search and wandering of the two in music. Ragga, short for raggamuffin, is a Jamaican type of spoken song. Furthermore, the brothers wanted to start a joint project in which they wanted to write more German lyrics for their songs. The request from the Viennese label DHF-Records for a purely German-language compilation Dancehallfieber gave the initial impetus. The first German-language song that came out of this was called God stand by me and was recorded at that time together with Christian "Bina" Birawsky, who is now a permanent member of the Beatbox formation Bauchklang . Bina was also an initial member of the group and was on tour as a DJ and singer.

From 2002 an intensive cooperation developed with the producers Sascha "Sasha" Preidel and Daniel "Dungee" Lindner, who at that time were studio neighbors of the Babacools and were active under the name Rumford-Music. The first songs that came out of this collaboration were fire and mission . In 2003 the first demo CD was produced, which was already making the rounds under the name Erste Welt but contained different songs than the later Raggabund debut. From this a first contact with Pierre "Enuff" Baigorry developed and subsequent tour offers as a support act for the Seeed formation.

At the same time, the collaboration with the Hamburg producer duo Silly Walks has been deepened. For these productions, however, the brothers decided to write mainly in Spanish. At the end of 2004, the Spanish-language reggae album Caramelo Criminal was published together with Silly Walks on PIAS. The brothers consciously decided against the name Raggabund for this project because the desired name for a Raggabund debut should be Erste Welt and German-speaking. At that time Alex "Lobstarr" Samimi was already MC & singer of the Silly Walks Movement and successor to Gentlemen who was part of the sound system until then. He was also involved in the production of "Caramelo Criminal" and over time he became a permanent member of Raggabund as a singer, pianist and DJ.

In 2006, the album Erste Welt with Sasha and Dungee was finally finished and published via Edel Music. Larger festival appearances followed, such as B. Summerjam, Chiemsee Reggae or Reggaejam and, together with the Babacools, two Germany tours called "Raggabund meets Babacools" in 2006 & 2007. For this live project, songs by Raggabund and Babacools were merged into one set.

In 2005 and 2008, at the invitation of the Goethe Institute, concerts in Perú, San Francisco and tours in Mexico & Guatemala were made possible for Caramelo Criminal. While Caramelo released two more albums with Babacools from 2005 and went on tour with Gentleman and Orishas, Paco produced his first solo album Consciente y positivo together with DJ Vadim in London and Cologne and released it in 2010 via Chusma Records. Paco was previously part of the multinational artist collective "Koalas Desperados" which was produced by Thilo "Teka" Jacks.

From 2009 the Raggabund got together with the Zurich backing band "The Dubby Conquerors". Common songs and various live sets were worked out. This was followed by joint tours with the WDR and festival shows such as B. the Rototom Sunsplash in Spain. In the same year the collaboration with the Cologne producer Til "Tailormade" Schneider intensified. The studied musician and trombonist most recently worked with artists such as BAP or Promoe (Looptroop) in the studio and played with greats such as Lalo Schifrin & Dee Dee Bridgewater , Paquito D'Rivera , Anthony B , Trombone Shorty and Dellé from Seeed . The joint production with Tailormade resulted in the release of the second Raggabund album Mehr Sound in 2012 . Many artist friends could be won over for the album such as B. Dr. Ring-Ding , Nosliw, Cajus & Roger (flowerpot), DJ Vadim, Mal Élevé (Irie Révoltés) or Macka B.

In June 2015 the Austrian indie reggae label Irievibration released the third album called Buena Medicina , which was recorded again with "The Dubby Conquerors". There was further help from members of the bands Jamaram and Les Babacools as well as Sebastian Sturm , Lengualerta, De Luca and Maria Rui. A video was shot for the play Nada Sirve .
