Tony Rebel (2008)

Tony Rebel (actually Patrick George Anthony Barrett ; born January 13, 1962 in Manchester Parish , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer. His peaceful, roots-oriented dancehall style is free from slackness or guntalk and wants to encourage his audience to think positively. He is one of the few deejays of the early dancehall period, known as Rastafarian , who wears dreadlocks as an outward sign .

Career

Before his success in the 1990s, Tony Rebel had been a singer on various sound systems in the Jamaican dancehall scene for over a decade . For the further career it was important that Sugar Minott brought him to Kingston in 1984 and let him take part in his sound system. In 1988 Tony Rebel recorded his first single Casino , the first successes were the singles Mandela Story , Fresh Dee-Jay and Music Fraternity , which were recorded for Penthouse Records the following year . At the beginning of the 1990s, more songs, especially successful in Jamaica, were written, many in collaboration with well-known reggae musicians. The first was Instant Death from Die Hard in 1990 , a sound clash with Cutty Ranks . This was later followed by joint productions with Macka B , Buju Banton , Anthony Red Rose , Marcia Griffiths , Garnett Silk and others. In 1994 Tony Rebel founded his record label Flames .

Tony Rebel became an internationally recognized dancehall star with Jah Is By My Side ( Lalibela - Riddim ) and the album If Jah (1998), which was released by VP Records .

Tony Rebels song Sweet Jamaica is part of the soundtrack to the film Cool Runnings .
