Jaya the Cat is a reggae , ska and punk rock band that was founded in Boston , ( Massachusetts / United States ) in the mid-1990s and made their adopted home in Amsterdam in 2003 .

history

Jaya The Cat was founded by Geoff Lagadec , Dave Smith and Ben Murphy . Their first regular album Basement Style was recorded in Boston. It received favorable reviews but received little attention outside of the Boston area. The band was nominated for Best Ska Band at the Boston Music Awards because of their live qualities. After David "The Germ" Germain, who had previously played with Shadows Fall , joined the drummer in 2001, the band began touring the United States and Europe .

In 2003 the live album Ernesto's Burning was recorded. After the release of the second album First Beer of a New Day , the two founding members Dave Smith and Ben Murphy left the band. The two remaining members then moved to Amsterdam. The band was subsequently supplemented by some Dutch musicians. Soon Jan Jaap "Jay" Onverwagt, Jeroen Kok (meanwhile replaced by Johan van't Zand) and Jordi Newcastle became permanent members of Jaya the Cat. In 2007 the band's third album, More Late Night Transmissions With… was released . The fourth album The New International Sound of Hedonism followed in 2012 .

Guitarist Dino Memic left the band on September 10, 2016. The previous keyboardist Karl Smith then took over the guitar and Christian Greevink, a new keyboardist, was brought in.

In June and July 2017 the band was in the studio to record their new album A Good Day for the Damned , which was released on November 17, 2017.

The band itself describes their style of music as "Drunk Rock Reggae " and names The Clash as their greatest musical influence.
