Oje Ken Ollivierre (born June 14, 1981 in Saint Elizabeth , Jamaica ), better known as Protoje , is a modern roots reggae singer and songwriter from Jamaica. His mother, Lorna Bennett, is a Jamaican singer, best known for her 1972 interpretation of Breakfast in Bed . His father is from St. Vincent and the Grenadines . Protoje combines Rub a Dub , Modern Roots Reggae and spherical Dub experiments with Deejay , Rap and Singjay styles. Along with Kabaka Pyramid , Chronixx , Janine "Jah9" Cunningham , Dre Island and Kelissa, Protoje is a representative of the reggae revival .

Musical career

Protoje became known through his mixtape Lyrical OverDose Volume 1 , published in 2005 . Mostly hip-hop -influenced songs were recorded. With a guest appearance by Busy Signal , however, his further career as a reggae and dancehall artist was paved. In 2010 the collaboration began with the producer, known in Jamaica, who was also Protoje's cousin Donovan Bennett, alias Don Corleon and his label Don Corleon Records . Following the 2010 release of Dread , JA and Roll , his debut album The Seven Year Itch was released on January 25, 2011. It includes u. a. Songs that were produced with Gentleman or Janine "Jah9" Cunningham. The first single Arguments was responsible for its early popularity in Jamaica . His album releases of The Seven Year Itch in 2011 and The 8 Year Affair 2013 led to increasing international success. Performances at various festivals followed, including the Garance Reggae Festival in France, the Summerjam and the Chiemsee Reggae Summer in Germany. In 2013 Protoje toured the United States and Europe on the Music from my Heart Tour , accompanied by band The Indiggnation. He also made a guest appearance on Kabaka Pyramid's Lead The Way EP (2013) and Jah9's album New Name (2013) and his album The 8 Year Affair was voted best album of 2013 by reggaeville readers .

In early 2014 he went on the In This Nation tour on the west coast of the United States and released the single Who Knows with Chronixx on March 18 . Further festival appearances in the United States and Europe are planned for the summer of 2014.

In May 2015 the third album Ancient Future was released. It was produced by Phillip "Winta" James. In addition to Chronixx, Mortimer and Sevana are also involved in the lyrics.
