Jeremy Loops , actually Jeremy Hewitt (born March 4, 1984 in Kommetjie ) is a South African singer-songwriter and environmental activist .

Life

Hewitt first studied real estate management at the University of Cape Town . After successfully graduating with a BSc Honors , he initially planned to pursue a career as an investment advisor. However, these plans quickly came to nothing and he toured over 20 countries for two years. It was around this time that the plan arose to earn a living as a singer-songwriter.

Together with the rapper Motheo Moleko and the saxophonist Jamie Faull, he released his debut album Trading Change in 2014 . The album reached number 1 in the charts after a few weeks in South Africa and was awarded gold. It was also album of the year for iTunes South Africa . With the decoupled No. 1 singles Down South (feat. Motheo Moleko) , Skinny Blues and "Sinner" , the modern folk singer also achieved an international breakthrough.

This was followed by solo concerts and festival appearances in the United States and Europe . At the MTV Africa Music Awards 2015 he won the Best Pop & Alternative Award , at the South African Music Awards he was nominated twice, a. a. as the best newcomer. He also received the MK Award for best live act.

After the US tour that started in mid-October as the opening act for the Californian world music band Rebelution , he also appeared as the opening act for the number 1 indie pop duo Twenty One Pilots in Europe. However, the last three shows of the tour were canceled at short notice due to the terrorist attacks in Paris .

In January 2016 he started his first European tour Continental-Drift , which also includes several stops in Germany , Austria and Switzerland .

Loops' mother comes from Switzerland. He has two sisters.

Music genre

Loops records its various sound loops with its Loop Station itself and superimposes them in several layers. This style of music inspired his stage name.

Environmental commitment

Following his world tour and his return to Cape Town, Loops contacted his old friend Misha Teasdale and got involved in the campaign to plant 1000 trees. Loops is also a co-founder of the South African environmental organization Greenpop and is still particularly active against deforestation.
