history

The MTV Africa Music Awards were created and designed by Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President and Music Director of the MTV Network in Africa. Before there were separate awards for Africa, African artists were honored at the MTV Europe Music Award . For example at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006 and 2007 , where African viewers could cast their votes in a televoting poll.

On November 22, 2008, the first award ceremony was held at the Velodrome in Abuja , Nigeria . The award ceremony was broadcast on November 29, 2008 in cooperation with Airtel and other local television stations. Trevor Nelson was the moderator . This was preceded by four concerts with artists nominated for the awards. These took place in Johannesburg , South Africa on November 5th, in Nairobi , Kenya on November 9th, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on November 13th and in Lagos , Nigeria on November 15th, 2008. The award was named Artist of the Year , Best Alternative, Best Female, Best Group, Best Hip-Hop, Best Live Performance, Best Male, Best New Act, Best R&B and Video of the Year. A special feature was the MY Video Award, where viewers could create their own music videos.

In 2009 the event was moved to the Moi International Sports Center in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2010 the event took place at the Eko Expo Hall in Lagos. That year the awards were supposed to represent the music of the whole continent more. The awards for Best Anglophone, Best Lusophone and Best Francophone Artist were given in new categories.

After a three year hiatus, the MTV Africa Music Awards returned on June 7, 2014. The fifth event took place on July 18, 2015 at the ICC, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal . The last edition took place on October 22, 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In 2017 the awards were suspended. The award show was originally supposed to come back in a new format in 2018, but no other event has been held so far.
