Apache Indian (real name Steve Kapur ; born May 11, 1967 in Birmingham ), also known as Don Raja , is a British rapper , singer and songwriter who celebrated several chart successes in the 1990s and is particularly valued for his Raggamuffin style. The most successful release was the 1993 Nuff Vibes EP , on which the title Boom Shack-a-Lak was.

biography

The Briton of Indian descent developed a preference for reggae early on . Inspired by Bob Marley and Steel Pulse , he became a DJ in the early 1980s and performed in various clubs with his reggae sound system . As Dancehall - Rapper Steve Kapur first small successes celebrated.

The first single Move Over India appeared in 1991 and offered a mixture of pop and reggae, Asian and Indian influences, which is also reflected in the stage name Apache Indian. In 1992 he switched to Island Records , where the album No Reservations was released in 1993 , which was made in Jamaica . Sly Dunbar and Robert Livingstone, among others, took part . This record received a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize . The name "Original British Bhangra Muffin Sound" prevailed for the style. In 1993 and 1994, Apache Indian was nominated for four BRIT Awards .

By 1997, several singles appeared that brought Apache Indian several chart positions in the United Kingdom . The Nuff Vibes EP even rose to position 5, but was also in the charts in Germany and Austria . The re-recording of the classic The Israelites , the original of which was a number one hit for Desmond Dekker in 1969 , brought the Raggamuffin star back into the Austrian singles charts in 2005.
