Khadja Nin

Khadja Nin (born June 27, 1959 in Burundi ) is a Belgian musician .

Life

Khadja Nin was born in Burundi as one of eight children . When she was sixteen she went to the neighboring country of Congo (then Zaïre ) to continue her education. There she met her husband, with whom she ran a guest house for tourists for several years. In 1980 the couple and their child left the region plagued by civil war and emigrated to Belgium . Her husband was murdered there. She went through a difficult time with her son. She kept her head above water with odd jobs.

In 1985 she met the music producer Nicolas Fiszman , who encouraged her to write songs. Nin accepted the advice and wrote songs in French, Swahili and Kirundi . Musically it was not set in any direction; she combined African elements with European pop and adopted elements of French Zouk and Latin American music . In 1991 the record company BMG became aware of her, with which she recorded her debut album Khadja Nin . In 1997 she sang Sailing in a duet with Montserrat Caballé on their album Friends For Life .

In 2018 she was appointed to the competition jury of the 71st Cannes Film Festival .

Khadja Nin is the ex- Formula 1 - racing driver Jacky Ickx married. She lives alternately in Monaco and in Ohain near Waterloo south of Brussels and is an ambassador for UNICEF .
