Kirundi , also Rundi and Rundisch , is a Bantu language widespread in Burundi (and spoken by around 95% of the population as their mother tongue) and, alongside French, the country's official language.

At the end of the 19th century, under the German colonial rule in Rwanda-Urundi , a Latin- based script was used.

The language is almost identical to Kinyarwanda, which is mainly spoken in neighboring Rwanda .
