CDex is a Windows program, a so-called CD ripper that the digital readout / ribs of audio CDs is used. The program was originally freely available under the GNU General Public License (GPL). However, since version 1.70 was released, no source code has been available and the software is bundled with adware .

features

The multilingual software CDex contains only rudimentary functions for error correction and error detection . However, the included cdparanoia can optionally be used, which then leads to high-quality rips that are comparable to EAC . Many codecs for the target format are already integrated in the software, such as (Ogg-) Vorbis , LAME MP3 and WMA . In addition, CDex can also be expanded with external audio codecs. Using the CDDB function, it is possible to call up track information on the inserted CD and transfer this information directly to the ID3 tags of the audio files generated.

history

Version 1.51 was released in September 2003. Until then, Albert L. Faber was responsible for the program. Since no new version was published for a long time, other programmers developed an unofficial beta version with the version number 1.60 - in this, among other things, errors were fixed and current codecs were used. Georgy Berdyshev has since resumed work on CDex. Among other things, the CVS repository was converted to SVN , in which some changes have now been recorded. On June 23, 2006 a new developer version (Beta 1.70b2) was released, which contains new functions and bug fixes . On June 30, 2007, one day after version 3 of the GPL was released , the license was updated. Thus CDex was one of the first large and popular projects to use the GPL version 3.

Version 1.70 was released on June 29, 2014 and for the first time no longer contained the source code of the program. The SVN repository, in which the last freely available source code from 2008 was still available until mid-2015, is no longer accessible.

The software contains adware such as OpenCandy or similar potentially unwanted programs. The installation allows a user-defined installation in which additional offers that are not required (e.g. Skype or Opera ) can be rejected.
