from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mutabaruka ( Kinyarwanda : "the always victorious") (formerly Allan Hope) (born December 26, 1952 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican dub poet, musician, DJ and radio presenter . One of his typical trademarks is that he still walks barefoot even in the freezing cold. He is married and has two daughters.

biography

After attending the technical school in Kingston for four years, he first worked as a technician at the Jamaican Telecom. During this time he confessed to the Rastafarian belief and redesigned his way of life (such as diet and haircut) according to "ital livity". In 1971 he moved to St. James , where he lived for a long time with his first wife Yvonne and their two children. After his national breakthrough with the single "Every Time A Ear De Soun", his debut album Check it was released in 1983 ; numerous other publications followed, which also made him known in Europe.

In addition, Mutabaruka often stayed in Negril , where he sought contact with foreign visitors in order to familiarize them with important aspects of life as a Rastaman. He is a staunch advocate of the Rastafarian faith, which he regards as one of many possible universal paths, alongside Buddhism , Hinduism and Christianity . In the radio shows "Cutting Edge" and "Steppin Razor" which he moderates on Irie FM, he repeatedly discusses social and religious issues. However, he rejects institutionalized forms of religious practice. This attitude and his spirituality can also be found in his poems and song texts. Mutabaruka is known, perhaps even more than for his music, for his alert and critical attitude towards political and social injustice.

On May 18, 2000, Mutabaruka gave a lecture at Stanford University that was specifically addressed to the local Caribbean Students Association. There he explained his view of the difference between upbringing and indoctrination .

In spring 2007 he got the opportunity to teach African American studies at Merritt College in Oakland . He has given lectures at various institutions in Jamaica, the USA, Canada, South Africa and Austria.

In 2010 he was recognized by the Rotaract Club for 30 years of continuous service in the arts. Also in 2010 a hut was built in his honor in Senegal . On March 24, 2019, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Irie FM.

He now lives with his second wife in a rural suburb of the capital Kingston.
