Y'akoto (born March 19, 1988 in Hamburg , bourgeois Jennifer Yaa Akoto Kieck ) is a German - Ghanaian soul singer and songwriter .

life and career

Y'akoto was born in Hamburg, but grew up in Ghana. She spent part of her youth in Cameroon , Togo and Chad . She currently lives in Hamburg, Lomé and Paris .

Since she was thirteen, Y'akoto has been musically active in various genres, from rock to reggae to electronic music . At the age of 18 she began training as a dance teacher . She also played in a band and performed with Max Mutzke , among others . In 2011 she was discovered by Norddeutscher Rundfunk as part of the Hamburg Sounds program and appeared in the opening act for Erykah Badu . After an EP in 2011, their debut album - the soul album Babyblues - was released on Warner Music International . Max Herre , Samon Kawamura and Roberto di Gioia were hired for the production .

Her first single was about the fate of the child soldier Tamba . This was followed by the second single Diamonds . She developed the single Without You in collaboration with the Norwegian singer and songwriter Tom Hugo. In 2012 she appeared in the opening act for Clueso . At the Echo Awards 2013 she was nominated in the category Artist Rock / Pop National .

In August 2014, Y'akoto released her second studio album Moody Blues . The theme is the duality of life. In the first single, Perfect Timing , she pleads for dealing indulgently with one's own inadequacies. The song Mother and Son is about single mothers; in Off the Boat is about the refugee crisis on the Mediterranean coast.

Her second album was also released by Warner Music International and was produced by Max Herre , Samon Kawamura and Roberto di Gioia . In addition, participating Mocky , Haze and the London producer Ben Cullum. Y'akoto went on tour at the end of 2014 and also played at several festivals in 2015. The album was nominated for an Echo in 2015 .

In 2017, Y'akoto was on the jury for the Anchor Award .
