Maximilian Joseph Auer (born July 14, 1795 or 1805 in Nymphenburg , † May 11, 1878 in Munich ) was a German porcelain painter .

life and work

Auer was the son of the porcelain painter Anton Auer (1778-1814), from whom he received his first training. His mother was Juliane Auer, née Harm, who married Johann Andreas Schmeller after the death of her husband in 1835 .

From 1814 Auer attended the public holiday school in Munich , where Hermann Mitterer trained him. In 1823, Auer was accepted into the Nymphenburg porcelain factory , where his father had been a senior painter. Auer worked there as an enamel painter under Christian Adler . In 1829 Auer was commissioned to continue the transfer of works from the royal gallery, which later became the Alte Pinakothek , to a dinner service , which his father had begun . He copied works by Peter Paul Rubens , Lorenzo di Credi and Raffael , among others , on porcelain plates.

Later Auer painted watercolors and worked as a glass painter . An eye disease eventually forced him to give up his artistic work.
