Pato Banton
Pato Banton (* 5. October 1961 in London , England ; as Patrick Murray ) is a British dancehall - reggae - singer .
Career
Murray was born in London but moved to Birmingham at the age of eight . As early as the 1970s, his stepfather, Jamaican DJ Lester Daley, gave him the opportunity to practice his musical talents. He let the boy take part as an MC in his "V-Rocket Reggae Sound System ". Soon he got the nickname Pato. In a talent competition that he won, he met Roger “Ranking” Charlery, one of the jurors. In 1982 Pato produced his first recordings with his band The English Beat and had a guest appearance on their album Special Beat Service with the song Pato and Roger a Go Talk .
In 1987 his solo debut album Never Give In was released . In 1990 Wize Up! (No Compromize) , on it was a cover version of the Police song Spirits in the Material World , which was the first hit for Pato Banton. The record also featured a joint title with Steel Pulse's David Hinds . In the same year, the dub album Mad Professor Recaptures Pato Banton was created in collaboration with Mad Professor , then a live album. Universal Love came out in 1992 . In 1994 Pato Banton brought out his next album, Collections , and another cover version became a hit that exceeded previous successes. Originally by Eddy Grant , Baby Come Back , sung by Pato Banton with Robin and Ali Campbell from UB40 , was number 1 in the UK music charts and among the top 5 in 20 other countries for four weeks .
More albums came out after that in not that quick succession. Life Is a Miracle received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in 2001 .
