Frank Roderick Elegar (born December 3, 1986 in the Bronx , New York ) is an American basketball player , who hails from the US Virgin Islands . For this US-American territory he competes as a national player in international games; In 2006 he was with this team silver medalist at the Central American Centrobasket . After completing his studies in the USA, Elegar turned pro in 2008 and signed his first contract with Eisbären Bremerhaven in the German basketball league . With this team he had little success and after stints in Turkey , France and Greece he won his first club title in 2013 with the Estonian championship in the team of BC Kalev.

Career

While studying at the Drexel University in Philadelphia played Elegar 2004-2008 for the college team Dragons in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) of NCAA Division I. The Dragons are not among the five schools that conference -übergreifend the Philadelphia Big Five mentioned to play traditional test of strength. The Dragons were last able to qualify for the national NCAA finals in 1996, long before Elegars began studying. During Elegar's student days there were no significant successes for the team even in the CAA, even if Elegar was individually selected among the five best players in the CAA finals 2007 ("CAA All-Tournament Team 2007").

Elegar had previously made his debut for the US Virgin Islands national team, with which he won the silver medal behind hosts Jamaica at the 2006 Caribbean Basketball Championships . This qualified as a medal winner for Centrobasket 2006 , in which the team surprisingly defeated the high favorites Puerto Rico with a point difference after a runaway victory at the start over the Dominican Republic and further victories in the semifinals . In the final, the comparatively young team was inferior to the experienced selection of the host Panama and won the silver medal. As a medalist, you were qualified for the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2007 Continental American Championships that took place the following year .

After an eighth place at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, the selection of the Virgin Islands at the start of the American Championship in Las Vegas suffered a disastrous 59: 123 defeat, in which they even won the second quarter, against the so-called "Redeem" team ( German  reparation ), as the selection of the host and mother country in preparation for the Olympic Games 2008 was called. Interestingly enough, this designation was due to the fact that three years earlier the American selection had suffered three disgraceful tournament defeats at the 2004 Olympic Games with former team captain Tim Duncan , who was born in the US Virgin Islands and who was no longer part of the US national team and had only won the bronze medal. In the following games of the American Championship, the selection of the Virgin Islands was able to partially rehabilitate itself with narrow defeats, but remained without a win and clearly missed a qualification for the Olympic Games in last and tenth place. At the Centrobasket 2010 Elegar was again represented in the final squad of the Virgin Islands, which, however, clearly missed a qualification for the American Championships in ninth place.

After completing his studies in 2008, Elegar signed his first professional contract with the German first division club and former play-off participant Eisbären from Bremerhaven . This slipped to the bottom of the table soon after the start of the basketball Bundesliga in 2008/09 and did not give it up in the course of the season, especially since the suspension of the German champion Marcus Slaughter, who later joined the Brose Baskets, weakened himself and asked for alternatives to Elegar's position Frontcourt brought. While the polar bears managed to stay in the class after the end of the season with a wildcard , Elegar moved from the German North Sea coast to the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi to the club from Bornova near Izmir on the Aegean coast . The first division promoted team surprised in seventh place after the main round and promptly made it into the play-offs for the championship, in which they were defeated in the first round by the later title winner Fenerbahçe Ülker .

For the season 2010/11 Elegar got a contract with the French club Jeanne d'Arc from Vichy in the LNB Pro A , where he, among others, with the former Bundesliga player Jamal Shuler played together, the same time as Elegar in the CAA for the Rams the Virginia Commonwealth University . At the end of the season, the team lacked a win to keep their league after eleven wins on the penultimate place in the table. Elegar then switched to the Greek A1 Ethniki for the Athens suburb club from Marousi . The renowned club, which had previously also been successful in European club competitions, was, however, practically illiquid after the withdrawal of sponsors and was relegated at the end of the season, although Elegar had already left the club at the end of January 2012 and moved back to neighboring Turkey. There he achieved relegation at the end of the season with the team from Antalya .

In the 2012/13 season, Elegar was then active for BC Kalev / Cramo from the Estonian capital Tallinn , who successfully defended his title in the 2013 Estonian championship. In the VTB United League 2012/13 they finished last in their group after only three wins. In contrast to the series winners of the Baltic Basketball League , Žalgiris Kaunas and Lietuvos rytas Vilnius from Lithuania , they continued to take part in the competition of this league and reached the semifinals there for the first time in the absence of the top Lithuanian clubs. There they lost to the later title winner BK Ventspils from Latvia , but could secure third place in the "small final" against BK Barons Rīga . After Elegar had played in the Caribbean for the Cangrejeros from Santurce in the Puerto Rican Baloncesto Superior Nacional in the summer of 2013 , Elegar returned to Tallinn, but stayed with the team in the VTB United League 2013/14 with two wins in 18 games unsuccessful and also eliminated in the first group stage of the increased Eurocup 2013/14 . In February 2015 he switched to the Euroleague participant EA7 Emporio Armani Milano .
