JAM FM is a private radio broadcaster. It is broadcast from studios on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin-Charlottenburg. With the slogan "93.6 JAM FM music that moves you", the station positions itself as a radio youth brand. JAM FM is available throughout Germany via cable and satellite as well as via an online stream.

The program is predominantly heard by listeners from the Berlin-Brandenburg area. The media analysis for 2019 shows an average hourly reach of 56,000 listeners for Monday to Friday, of which 49,000 listeners in Berlin-Brandenburg alone and 36,000 listeners (31,000 in Berlin-Brandenburg) in the advertising-relevant group of 14 to 49 year olds.

history

The station was founded in Berlin in 1993 and went on cable broadcast throughout Germany on January 15, 1994. On August 1, 1994 at 12:00 noon, JAM FM was temporarily absorbed into Hit FM . The owner of the Munich radio station 89 Hit FM had joined JAM FM at the time and wanted to convert it into a hit music format. 89 Hit FM was heard for the first time outside of Munich (24 hours via cable and the Kopernikus satellite at 23.5 ° East), where it maintained a terrestrial frequency with the FM 89.0. However, the joint venture only lasted about six weeks. In mid-September 1994 Hit FM was taken off the satellite and cable networks again. From then on it broadcast again 12 hours a day in Munich.

A continuous loop ran on JAM FM until October 1994, when regular programming was resumed. Jörg Wachsmuth (1994–2005 presenter at JAM FM including morning show Sunrise from 1997–2002) reported on the beginnings of the station and its importance for black music in Germany in an interview for Detector.FM about a partly experimental program, the lived motto “The Finest in Black Music “and the great role model Kiss FM New York.

With the departure of the partner and managing director Matthias Bimmermann at the end of 2004, the partner Frank Nordmann took over the management of Skyline Medien GmbH, brand owner of JAM FM, himself. In 2005 the Saarbrücker Zeitung bought Skyline Medien Saarland GmbH and with it the program and the Saarland frequencies from JAM FM Saarland.

The managing partner Frank Nordmann completely restructured the station in 2005. Reyk Heyer, who moved from BB RADIO as program director to Jam FM, introduced professional and contemporary structures for the first time and marketed the program as “Black Music Radio”, was new to the company. After his departure, Ricky Breitengraser took over the editorial management for a few weeks. After an interview for the ZDF magazine FRONTAL 21, Breitengraser left the station, but had previously been responsible for a new reorganization of the program, through which some established special programs were canceled from August 2007, among others. a. the JAMacianVibez with Michael Berth and the Quiet Storm with Oliver Springer, as Blue Notes (Jazz) with Stephan Oettel. Other formats were also lost, e.g. B. the replay with Megan Jones or the Nightgroove with Beate Dyballa. The German rap show JAM's Rapublik , which has also been canceled, has been included in the JAMvFM program again thanks to the efforts of the listeners and is currently broadcast on Sundays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Before the relaunch, the show Soul Source with Florian Diehl was canceled.

In autumn 2007 Frank Nordmann and Reyk Heyer as well as the majority of the employees left the station. The new managing director was Matthias Gülzow, who held this position in addition to his work as managing director of Radio Paradiso GmbH & Co. KG and RHB Radiohaus Berlin GmbH.

In 2014, RTL Radio Center Berlin GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of RTL Radio Deutschland, acquired ten percent of the company's shares. Since then, JAM FM has also been broadcasting from the studios on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin-Charlottenburg . In January 2019, the shareholder increased the stake to 49.9 percent.

Carolin Häublein has been managing director of the station since February 2011, and Stephan Schmitter since June 2014.

Charisma

On January 1, 2010, JAM FM stopped analogue cable and satellite broadcasting after broadcasting digitally via Astra for the first time shortly before.

Since 2001, JAM FM has also been broadcasting terrestrially in Berlin and Brandenburg, initially using smaller frequencies in the area around Berlin that did not reach the city center, since the FAZ business radio stopped broadcasting its Berlin FM frequency 93.6 MHz, which has 2, 4 kW radiates from the Berlin television tower and has a technical range of 4.6 million listeners.

For a while, JAM FM was also broadcast terrestrially in Saarland. A regional program was also organized there in the afternoon. In addition to JAM FM itself, the Saarbrücker Zeitung also held a 30% stake in the Saarland offshoot and the big FM shareholder Moira Rundfunk (part of the Medien Union ) held 19%. Since September 5, 2005, Bigfm Saarland has been broadcasting on the former frequencies of JAM FM Saarland .
