• It was the band's first album with Jonathan Cain replacing Journey's first keyboardist Gregg Rolie .

In the American Rolling Stone the album was given negative reviews when it was released and only got two out of five possible stars. In retrospect, however, the album received an excellent review from Allmusic ; the author awarded four and a half out of five stars and described the work as groundbreaking ( "groundbreaking") and singing as passionate ( "passionate").

In 1988 the album was voted the best arena rock album of all time by readers of Kerrang magazine . In the same magazine, Escape was ranked 32nd in the list of the best heavy metal albums of all time in 1989 . In a poll by the Virgin Group , the album was ranked 24th among the best alternative rock or heavy metal albums of all time. It was mentioned at number 22 in the list of the best rock albums of all time by Classic Rock magazine.

In the United States, the album achieved nine platinum status and was sold at least nine million times.
