Pornograffitti is the second studio album by the American band Extreme , released in 1990 .

background

The band Extreme had released their debut album in 1989 , which received little commercial attention and only gave the band national fame. It peaked at number 80 on the US album charts .

The production of the second album was taken over by Michael Wagener from Germany, who had made a name for himself from the mid-1980s with his studio work for bands such as Dokken ( Under Lock and Key ) and Skid Row ( Skid Row ).

In addition to Pat Travers , who shared the vocals for Get the Funk Out with Gary Cherone, Dweezil Zappa also took part in the recordings and contributed solos to He-Man Woman Hater . A brass section was recorded for the title Li'l Jack Horny , the musicians involved were Bob Findley and Chuck Findley ( trumpet ), Bill Watrous ( trombone ), Dick Hyde (bass trombone) and Pete Christlieb and Joel Peskin ( tenor saxophone ).

As singles titles were Decadence Dance, Get the Funk Out, More Than Words, Hole Hearted and Song for Love decoupled.

reception

Pornograffitti reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 in the USA, number 12 in Great Britain and number 15 on the album charts in Germany. According to the criteria valid at the time, the album was awarded a gold record in the USA in May 1991 , had already reached platinum status in June of the same year and was double platinum in October 1992.

The German magazine Musikexpress wrote in October 1990 that "full force ahead" was the motto of the four musicians from Boston. “Pumping party rock from the Aerosmith school” is their basis, but unlike Tyler, Perry & Co., extremes are “more willing to experiment.” Produced by Michael Wagner, “Funk-Metal-Rhythms, brass and brass instruments appeared on their second LP Swing piece in the best Sinatra manner ”. Thematically, “many of the texts revolved around the over-sexualization of society.” The “fretboard work of the quartet” lies “solely in the hands of one man: Nuno Bettencourt, a first-class string artist, versatile and agile like hardly anyone else,” the stuff have to "become a new guitar hero."

Metal Hammer stated, “It would be a gross exaggeration if someone should come up with the idea of calling this album an 'extreme' affair, because Extreme cannot come up with real extremes in the sound or in the selection of songs”, “for that but with a very varied album. ”One should pay attention to the“ musical range ”with which the band operates. Let the first song Decadence Dance raise the suspicion that you are “dealing with a run-of-the-mill poser troupe here,” teaches you “the following Lil 'Jack Horny , grooving on rich brass sections, ” on Get The Funk Out showed "Extreme then unmistakably that metal-funk is in their blood". More Than Words is "almost Beatles-like, ballad-like with 'Yesterday' guitar." Without a doubt, "this album is an extreme adventure - but only for the intolerant metal fan!"

Rock Hard gave the album a negative review: “Not even remotely” has the band improved “compared to their extremely weak debut.” It “really hurts to see how record companies waste their money on bands that haven't the slightest trace of talent ”. The album is an "extra long LP," the saying "the short is the spice" is "absolutely correct." For "the completely unimaginative material a maxi would have been enough." Extreme is a third-rate Kiss copy, nothing more!
