Under Lock and Key is the third studio album by the US hard rock band Dokken , released in November 1985 . After Tooth and Nail, it was the second release by the group to be awarded both a gold record and platinum.

background

Dokken had already been able to attract attention with their debut album , Breaking the Chains , which was released in Cologne in 1982 , even if the group was still unable to make the album charts . The second album Tooth and Nail , produced by Tom Werman , did not enter the album charts, but the single Alone Again made it to number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1985 and stayed on the hit list for 11 weeks. The album sold so well that it was awarded a gold and a platinum record for a total of more than 1 million albums sold.

In order to maintain this standard, the band engaged the music producer Michael Wagener , whom singer Don Dokken had known since his stay in Germany , and who was responsible for the production of the debut album and the sound mix for Tooth and Nail .

The group went to the studio with him, but the producer's job went beyond the normal scope of his assignment. Wagener later referred to it as his main job to separate the quarreling musicians Don Dokken (vocals) and George Lynch (guitar) in order to ensure decent studio work:

There were extreme moments when we had to keep the two twenty miles apart. We therefore worked in two different studios. However, I find that their difficult relationship was good for the music. Negative tensions can also have a positive effect. "

- Michael Wagener :

The recordings took place at Amigo Studios ( Hollywood ) and All Access Studios in Redondo Beach ; the sound mix was done by Neil Kernon, Michael Wagener and the sound assistants Mark Wilczak, Cliff Bonell and Michael Lardie. The album was released on November 22, 1985.

The reviewer Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic said of this album that it was the record that brought Dokken the commercial breakthrough in their native America. Nevertheless, “Under Lock and Key can hardly be called a monster hit”, it owes its success “to a number of successful, but hardly explosive singles ”. But even if you omit everything that helped the album, what remains in the end is “ probably the most complete Dokken album ” that has something to offer every fan. The most important thing is that "Under Lock and Key" offers " two of the almost incomparable examples of the band's songwriting qualities, namely" Unchain The Night "and" The Hunter, "both of which also offer fantastic solos by the guitar wizard George Lynch ". Rivadavia concludes that “ these two tracks are the best introduction to Dokken's sound ,” even though heavy metal purists tended to prefer “Tooth and Nail” for its combination of aggression and consistency. "

Daniel Böhm wrote that the album was "a splendid piece of sophisticated US hard rock" that demonstrated "from the first to the last note" how "very little Dokken musically had anything to do with the rampant glamor wave from LA" . No second LP of the troupe sounds "as clear, powerful and hardy as this one."

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded the album on March 4, 1986 with a gold record for 500,000 units sold; on April 14, 1987 the album received the platinum award for one million records sold.
