Back for the Attack is the fourth studio album by the US hard rock band Dokken , released in 1987 . It is at the same time the group's most successful release to date and the last joint studio album before they split up in 1989.

Album description

Dokken had a first chart success in 1985 with the single Alone Again from the album Tooth and Nail , which was released in 1984. Their commercial breakthrough the band had then with the 1985 Michael Wagener radio friendly produced album Under Lock and Key , which the in February 1986 No. 32 Billboard 200 reached and its single In My Dreams it in March 1986 at number 77 of the Billboard Hot 100 managed .

Under Lock and Key stayed in the US charts for 66 weeks and brought the band enough attention to live with the recording of a title for the soundtrack to the horror film Nightmare III - Freddy Krueger (Original title: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors ) to be commissioned. The songwriting for the track Dream Warriors , which can be heard during the credits, was done by guitarist George Lynch and bassist Jeff Pilson . The soundtrack for the film was released in spring 1987 and a remix was created for the Dokken album .

Of the thirteen pieces on the album, the tracks Heaven Sent and Burning Like a Flame were released as singles .

George Lynch named a guitar he designed after the title Mr. Scary .

reception

Back for the Attack reached number 13 on the US album charts on December 19, 1987 and stayed in the hit list for 33 weeks. It was awarded gold and platinum on January 14, 1988 .

"Dokken is again attacking chart positions. The US quartet from Los Angeles took two years for their steel-hard opus "Back For The Attack". The compositions do not reach the quality of the million seller "Under Lock And Key", but the long groove makes up for it with solo pieces. Especially guitarist George Lynch - he usually steals the show from his powerful-voiced boss Don Dokken - shines with a dexterity that should cause Eddie Van Halen sleepless nights. If you also like perfect heavy drumming like in "Mr. Scary", Dokken's fourth LP will definitely be shortlisted. "

- stereo play

Daniel Böhm wrote that the sound of Back for the Attack seemed "drier and aggressive". George Lynch would “burn down a divine fireworks display” in the instrumental piece Mr. Scary , which cemented his reputation as “one of the most style-defining guitar heroes of the eighties” . It is "another royal album with reasonable lengths" ; The only thing incomprehensible is that "of all things, the title song is only hidden on a maxi back" .

Singles

The title Burning Like a Flame describes the long-lasting but not stable relationship between two people from the perspective of the narrator. He depicts that in the course of the time together he had doubts whether the love would last and that he was aware that the other person also doubted it and was not convinced of his intentions. Now he wants to prove that the necessary substance is available to enter into a serious connection. Burning Like a Flame reached number 72 in the US singles charts on January 16, 1988 , and stayed in the hit list for eight weeks.

Even Heaven Sent takes up the theme of love and relationships, but here the text revolves around being torn of one partner, who indeed wants love, but is annoyed many positions of the partner and she refuses. The song most likely fits the situation not with someone, but also not being able to live without them . This single couldn't reach the charts.
